Movie Reviews of LookerMovie Review: This is a fun piece of 1980s cheese. Summary: 3 Stars
I am biased by nostalgia because I saw this movie about 100 times on cable when I was 11 or 12. The plot is ludicrous in a way that did not bother me then (models are being violently killed because... a secret model-simulating computer means they aren't needed any more? what?) and a plastic surgeon is trying to save one of them. It's weird, and there are actually signs that it thinks it is a real social satire or paranoia-fest about technology infiltrating our lives. "It makes you think," we are probably supposed to think. But if the computer can create a 100 percent credible animation of a woman, why does it need an actual set for her to walk around on? Wouldn't a kitchen table be even easier for the computer to image? Well, without the sets there wouldn't be as interesting a shoot-out at the end, I guess. So, okay, the movie didn't age super-well, but the time-stopping light guns are still cool and I still enjoyed watching it, the way I still enjoy Night of the Comet and other semi-innocent mid-list 80s action fare. I paid about $6 to own this; at $8 I'd have regrets.
Movie Review: Slightly prophetic Summary: 3 Stars
When this movie first came out I recall thinking it was fun - average acting, little suspense, neat optical guns. Seeing it now some 26 years later it hasn't aged too well. The acting still is only average. And like some other reviewers I'm not sure what the motive was for murdering the models - seems like the bad guys could accomplish everything they wanted and not drawn attention to themselves if they had not hurt the models.
Why rate this a 3 and not less? The reason why this still rates a 3 after all this time is the very forward-thinking premise about using computers to create digital actors and actresses. It was viewed very suspiciously in the movie. Today we accept this as nothing special, and even appreciate the value of such technology. I'm impressed by Michael Crighton's ability to see the future in this back in 1981.
Good movie to own? Probably not.
Good movie to rent and watch? Absolutely.
Movie Review: Susan Dey Showcase Summary: 3 Stars
...Honestly, I purchase this movie because someone I knew appeared in it. I chose this one from others because, I always felt that Susan Dey was more talented than given credit for and I wanted to see what she did with it. The story line was probably stronger in the early 80'S and the ceators may have wanted to do something thoughtful and maybe ahead of its time.....you might enjoy it more than I did. Susan's full nudity was important to the tech aspect of the story, so it is not out of place.
Movie Review: worth seeing Summary: 3 Stars
I won't repeat all the commentary on the plot and acting that many other reviewers have pointed out. I will though make note that Looker was the first movie that used computer graphics for its effects. It was the first and worth looking at for that alone. Before Tron, (although not by much) it was putting something out there that is now commonplace to all movie watchers.
Movie Review: Its all about the Look. Summary: 3 Stars
Looker was such an interesting story to me. I first saw it during the summer back in the early 80's on HBO, and remembed how much i liked watching it as a kid. It is worth the money, especially if you like Susan Dey, Albert Finney, models getting murdered and a gun that stops time.
