Movie Reviews of Longtime CompanionMovie Review: Stunningly wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
I am a playwright, a straight forty two year old teacher who writes a lot of pieces about homophobia and aids for my high school students. I must believe that this film, and the play Our Town are the two most influential pieces in my writing life...This probably shouldn't matter to you but it matters to me. Many of my friends think there are better films...but this is such a beautiful work . The acting in it, Bruce Davidson, Mark Lamos, Stephen Caffrey, Mary Louise Parker,....so miraculous, so rich. The movies is heartbreakingly sad, the plague in human terms, but at times, extremely funny. The string quartet of ymca is quite amazing. And I won't give away the last scenes...but...for me, they some very influential sentiments and concepts. I can't praise this thing enough.
Movie Review: Longtime Companion - One Of My Favorite Films! Summary: 5 Stars
"Longtime Companion" is one of my desert island movies! It is a beautiful blend of informative, realistic, heartbreaking, hilarious and deeply moving. Craig Lucas has painted a vivid, realistic portrait of the ascent of AIDS awareness - in both the gay and straight communities - while drawing you in to the lives of a circle of friends who you will come to love as your own, with brilliant performances from Bruce Davison, Mary Louise Parker, Dermot Mulroney, and the list goes on. This film is both important, for its message, and beautiful, for its sensitive handling of the complex issues surrounding AIDS and friendship. Buy it - you will be glad you did!
Movie Review: It Shouldn't Have Happened - But It Did! Summary: 5 Stars
Longtime Companion is the depiction of a group of friends as they live through the AIDS crisis. For anyone that has had a friend or loved one die of AIDS, this is a movie that will help you cope. Everyone will identify with one character or another. The only thing that I have to say about this movie, other than it is absolutely fabulous, was that gay enough?, is that the ending will make you cry when you realize that: It shouldn't have happened but what if....... It doesn't matter what your sexual orientation is, this movie is a must see because it tells us what happened, not only with emotions, but with love and understanding.
Movie Review: Heatwarming Film Summary: 5 Stars
This film was recommended by a friend for research to learn about the lives of gay men in the early 80s. I was truly moved by this film. The relationships, touching moments and the tasteful way all was portrayed throughout the film. It was quite eyeopening to me as a heterosexual to learn what the homosexual man went and go through when contracting HIV/AIDS and any earlier forms of it. It was the discrimination, racism and lack of respect that was very disturbing to me. I laughed, cried and at points felt their pain. A great movie!
Movie Review: Excellent movie about the ravages of the Aids epidemic Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD is of excellent quality. It starts just as news starts coming out about a new "gay" disease. It shows the ravages on people's lives, the deaths, the prejudice and the government's complete indifference to the plague. Eventually, they start doing something but as 'And the Band Plays On' shows, it is too little, too late. These people become real to you and their suffering is painful to watch.
