Movie Reviews of Longtime Companion

Movie Review: A moving potrayal of the beginning of the AIDS epedemic in New York 1981
Summary: 5 Stars

This film is an intimate look into the lives of a group of Gay men in New York at a time when people knew each other by actual association because of Gay enclaves in the city and on Fire Island versus the more removed options for socializing we have today. It is a first rate production with compelling characters propelled by talented actors, writers, director and production. What is most interesting about this film is how far we have come societally because of the advancement of Civil Rights for LGBT people since the time of this story. Longtime Companion is a phrase borrowed from New York Times obituaries of a pre-liberation era that euphemized and minimized the full scope, depth and breadth of the love between romantic partners and good friends.Thank God we can be ourselves today and thank God we can live openly and without shame or stigma to be not only "Longtime Companions" but partners to each other and now even grooms and Husbands.(From Los Angeles).

Movie Review: Have AIDS, know someone who does? This is the movie for you.
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first encountered this movie, it was on TV and I caught the very end, and watched my best friend cry. I asked him what it was, and he told me. So, I went and rented the movie, and knew exactly why he was crying. I found the DVD and bought it instantly. I love playing it for my friends who haven't seen it so I can cry with them. The song "Post Mortem Bar" at the end caps off a great film.
I am glad there were no stereotypical gay men in this movie, because it helped to show the universality of the disease. It can hit anyone. There were some scenes that could have been deleted (I.E. the deer on the beach, the "hot date" line) but they helped add length to an otherwise very short movie. In any case, a great movie that has, and will continue to stand the test of time when dealing with AIDS. And, on a lighter note, if you are gay, and haven't seen this movie, I'm taking away your gay card and not giving it back until you do!

Movie Review: A Classic FINALLY back in print! :)
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been lucky enough to view an advance promotional copy of MGM Home Entertainment's brand new dvd version of the classic AIDS themed film, "Longtime Companion."

Well, I have to say this film has never had such clear sound and beautiful picture quality. The Letterbox transfer is perfect and the Stereo is VERY nicely done. We watched it on a very large, THX system and the sound was channeled very well.

I have to give many votes of praise to MGM for re-releasing this wonderful title that was out of print for much of the 90's. I can't say how happy I am to see a quality, letter-box release of this movie! It's about time!! :)

So, PLEASE, don't waste another dime of your money paying for the poor quality, out-of-print version Vidmark released of this in 1990. I know you're gonna have to wait until January for the official release of this dvd, but, believe me it's worth it!

Movie Review: Captures the times beautifully
Summary: 5 Stars

"Longtime Companion", the first full-length chronicle of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, remains as fresh a look today as when it was made in 1990. Beginning with the discovery of a "gay cancer" in 1981, the film follows a group of loosely-knit friends on a year-to-year basis throughout the decade, and does so with empathy and humor. There are many fine performances, including a moving one by a young Campbell Scott.

"Longtime Companion" seeks to reflect but also to educate, reminding viewers that the deaths of these friends held meaning not only for their intimates but for the larger community as well. AIDS may not make the headlines it once did, but it still warrants a good deal of medical attention through research and human consideration for those who have the disease. It would be fascinating if an updated "Longtime Companion" could ever be made.

Movie Review: Important must-see movie for EVERYONE!
Summary: 5 Stars

Touching movie that everyone should see, whether you or gay or straight! I was young and unaware when the AIDS crisis began, and this film educated me SO MUCH about what it was like when it all began. I am so happy to be able to tape over my "taped off of cable" VHS tape, now that this long out of print film is on DVD! The picture is crystal clear, and it sounds great. The sound has not been remastered in 5.1, but it's okay, because this is not a sound effects laden sort of film. The letterboxing makes it look even better- the pan and scan TV version is sort of annoying to watch, so this DVD is a vast improvement! There really aren't too many extra's on this DVD to speak of: just a trailer. No cast or crew bio's, no commentary from anyone that worked on the film. I cannot complain too much, I'm just happy that this movie is available on DVD.
