Movie Reviews of Longitude

Movie Review: Longitude: not just for mariners
Summary: 5 Stars

Recently I had to read sobel's book for my advanced freshman science class this summer, which I was forced into, but fortunately the book was pretty good. It is quite humorous because sobel's book is slightly stretched from real life, and the movie, although based on the book, is gravely stretched from the book. Providing an interesting blend of entertainment to us that have read the book telling other viewers in the room: how distorted it is, while they tell us to shut up and watch. Which incites a Brazilian street-brawl. But it is some of the best work A & E has shown since their biography of Adam West. Also Jeremy Irons is not a porn star, just wanted to clear that up.

Movie Review: The Best!
Summary: 5 Stars

This has it all! History, science, a great adventure story, great acting. Michael Gambon and Jeremy Irons are superb! Though I haven't read the book I got the book for my Dad a number of years ago. He's a scrooge about books and loved it!
This has a fast-paced story; lots of action shots, verve and movement. The story never dulls and moves easily and effectively. I've watched it nearly a dozen times. If you are interested in how academy, science, and politics collide; are interested in how difficult the scientific and historical processes were almost 300 years ago, this is a DVD for you!

Movie Review: Brilliant period piece
Summary: 5 Stars

Despite a rather technical and slightly 'dry' topic the two part movie captivates you from the offset and by the end you wish it would not end. The acting is breathtaking, the costumes and cinematography amazing and it provides a highly educational angle while you are entertained.

It not only covers a vital invention and discovery but also cleverly describes two human destinies, of two men almost living parallel lives, 200 years apart. Both obsessed with the time pieces and both close to losing everything including their minds in their pursuit of their dream

Masterpiece!

Movie Review: A GRAND FILM
Summary: 5 Stars

Beautifully acted, grandly designed film, one of the most impressive period dramas ever created either for TV or cinema. Michael Gambon, Jeffrey Irons, Brian Cox, Nigel Davenport, and a wide array of great British acting talent bring to magnificent life writer-director Charles Sturridge's thoughtful script based on the true story of John Harrison, pioneer inventor who provided the first clock able to gauge longitude accurately and thus save so many lives at sea. A wondrous achievement which would appeal to those who (like myself) don't have a clue about the subject. Not only entertaining!

Movie Review: Human nature against New inventions.
Summary: 5 Stars

As a veteran Airman ( I used to be a Combat Pilot for over 40 years ) and today the President of an Avionics Development and Production Company, I was exposed time and again to bureaucratic friction which works against any new invention. During my life time ( I am now 65 years old ) I have learnt that this phenomenom repeats itself through mankind history. It seams that the only thing that has changed is technology, while human nature remained the same.
The film "Longitude" and book are both a good example to emphasize this problem. I use them when lecturing about this subject.
