Movie Reviews of Lonely are the Brave (Universal Backlot Series)

Movie Review: Douglas At his best
Summary: 5 Stars

At last we are able to see a DVD of Lonely Are The Brave - It's been a long time coming. As a long time fan of Kirk Douglas, I'm divided over what constitutes his best work. The most ardent of fans would have to say that Douglas scored some stinkers in his time. But most would agree that he more than held his own with his peers of the 50's, 60's & 70's, e.g. Stewart, Wayne, Fonda, Heston etc and at times surpassed them. It's generally held that Kirk's best work encompasses such films as Champion, Paths Of Glory, Lust For Life, Spartacus, Seven Days In May and Lonely Are The Brave. The latter is all the more remarkable because it was made on a shoestring budget, was filmed in black & white and introduced us to some future acting luminaries such as Gena Rowlands, Walter Matthau & George Kennedy, along with the musical genius of Jerry Goldsmith. If Lonely Are The Brave is not Douglas's best work, it certainly comes close. For me 5 stars, without a doubt.

Movie Review: Almost a Genre of its Own
Summary: 5 Stars

As an Edward Abbey fan, I've been wanting to see this movie for a long while. It did not disappoint at all, whether you read the book or not. It plays with your expectations of the standard Western right from the start, and you are clued in quickly that this one may not play out like a typical tale.

Kirk Douglas is Jack Burns, oh how he brings it. He hides somewhat behind his smiling exterior, but is truly himself and at home out on the range. The movie packs All Stars- Walter Matthou always makes the character more deep and wry than likely was in the script, a young George Kennedy as a tough cop, Carroll O'Connor driving the truck, and apparently (according to IMDb) Bill Bixby gets no film credit for being one of the helicopter co-pilots.

The real star is Whiskey, the horse!

Movie Review: Great film; not great video transfer
Summary: 5 Stars

Lonely Are The Brave is my favorite film, period. I was so pleased to see it getting a DVD release. But, on a 60 inch plasma, played in both a PS3 and an Oppo, the beautiful black and white photography is marred by innumerable pixel dots. And, having seen the original picture many times in theaters on huge screens, they were not there originally. I doubt this will ever be issued in Blu-Ray.
Question: does anyone else with a very large screen have this problem?
(For some reason, innumerable cheap old black and white films in 4x3 aspect ratio never have this problem. I have only seen it in some widescreen, both Blu Ray and non-Blu Ray. Any explanation would be appreciated.)

Movie Review: Missing the point
Summary: 5 Stars

Most of the previous reviewers are missing the full significance of this film, its lead actor, and the original writer. This ended up being the favorite film of an iconic actor and written by an equally iconic southwestern curmudgeon/commentary/conservation writer known to American literature. This was one of Edward Abbey's first books. Abbey would soon become better known for Southwestern classics as Desert Solitaire and The Monkey Wrench Gang. Soon after its publication as The Brave Cowboy, Douglass read the book and immediately demanded to make the movie. His love of the book shows; as the film follows the book very closely. It is easy to see why he named it his favorite movie of his.

Movie Review: 1/2 box of kleenex
Summary: 5 Stars

The first time I watched this movie was in the rec room of the barracks at Ft. Bragg N.C. .My Friend was visiting me and trying to tell me that he had just recieved his orders for Viet Nam, but I ignored him because I was too interested in the movie. The same night my new wife was watching it at home in CO. with her family . I was told that between her ,her two sisters and her mom, that they went thru a half a box of kleenex. I heard Kirk Douglas state that it was his favorite movie.
