Movie Reviews of Logan's Run

Movie Review: Logan's Run is a stunning retro-futuristic classic.
Summary: 5 Stars

Film about population & resource control in a future post-war setting.
Cool retro-futuristic sets; definitely 70's style fashion and decor. Great actors, they're all easy to identify with and are believable in their roles. I can put this movie on frequently and enjoy it every time; there aren't any lulls in the plot or "unnecessary fluff." I haven't read the book, from what I hear the movie leaves out/changes details- But if you haven't read the book, you obviously aren't going to miss it and it's still very enjoyable. It makes you want to read the book afterward to hear more about the world of Logan's Run.

I've heard this film compared to "The Island," which I have also seen. I really think Island is more like "Coma" with Michael Douglas.
Logan's Run is mainly about population/resource control out of necessity to maintain humanity, while "The Island" and "Coma" are about Money/Greed by showing how far people will go to live longer and what business'll do to make it possible for those that can afford it.
In Island & Coma, the motivation for keeping the 'secluded world of clones' is not for survival as much as the chase for immortality and the resultant immoral lengths people take to attain it.
Logan's Run is about the chase of truth and freedom, to escape from their isolated dome world to discover a deserted, isolated earth. Though they are killed at 30, it is humane in contrast to the mutilation of those in Coma/Island.

Movie Review: Logan's Run: Pride of the 70's
Summary: 5 Stars

When I watched this as a youth back in 1980 or so, I really thought I must be the only one weird enough to not only like it but love it. Since then, I've seen it lots of times. Now the DVD has made it even better, with a very nice anamorphic transfer, and a very imaginative re-mastering of the sound into 5.1 surround. The whole job done on the DVD is first-rate, including snappy, subtle menus (none of that expensive, interminable Star Wars etc. tripe!).

The commentary is both informative and amusing. The director Michael Anderson gives a good performance, accompoanied by Michael York who is very suave and silly, as you would expect him to be. He actually says things like, "you know, in movies, they sometimes go from the studio set to outside, just like that!" which is very funny. Also featured is the costume designer whose name of course escapes me. He sometimes seems a little embarrassed, but really I think most people wouldn't have the costumes any other way.
If anyone is reading this who doesn't already know the movie, I'd be surprised. It's THAT kind. Any showing in a group will result in disaster, unless your friends are all of a very like mind.

This movie isn't out on DVD in the UK, forcing me to cheat because I can't wait for it. PAL, by the way, is a bit sharper than NTSC but flickers a little more, so take your pick.

Movie Review: Great 70's movie...
Summary: 5 Stars

Even if you're not into science fiction, this is a great movie to watch, if not own. In a society where nobody lives over 30 years of age, it's interesting to see how humanity has evolved. It seems that almost everybody is OK with dying prematurely at age 30 - it shows how callous humanity can become when they are "going along with the crowd" or (unwittingly or not) become involved in "groupthink." This movie show how these problems can be avoided; it is possible to break out of the mold. Although it can be painful at times, it is possible to be an individual within a socialistic environment.

This movie is a classic! The DVD version is especially clear, and it gives some good features with it. I had hoped it might include some of the deleted scenes, but these seem to be largely lost. Although I remember seeing parts of this movie years ago, I appreciate it more as an adult. Now that I'm older, I can understand the meaning behind this movie.

I encourage everybody to at least watch this movie once. At times, the effects, scenery, and characters are a little cheesy or outdated or two-dimensional. But, it was made in the mid-70's, so what can you expect?! Right now, at Amazon, it's selling for a really good price - well worth the money!

Movie Review: "logan five, approach and identify."
Summary: 5 Stars

one of my favorite things about movies about the future is how everything is always a slightly more rad version of now. i mean, come on! in the future everything is based on radio waves, over-sized computers and shag hair cuts?! probably the best example in this movie is the giant gas pump in the new you plastic surgery clinic. i'm assuming this beast measures not the amount of gasoline that they aren't using to power their non-existent cars, but instead it seems to be measuring the strength of the lasers that miraculously peel away flesh and bone and give guys dark hair because that's what farrah fawcett likes.

all said in love. i rarely make it all the way to the end though. i'm usually losing interest sometime around the skinny dip scene because, well, let's face it - logan's got a flat li'l fanny, and jessica is kind of creepy with that fake-sounding british/cultured accent that people are required to use when they're in movies about the future (carrie fisher comes to mind here).

all in all, an entertaining film that brings up some of the more poignant "what-if" questions that we're currently facing with over-population, pollution and casual drug abuse.

Movie Review: the little button in my palm started blinking red SEVEN years ago!
Summary: 5 Stars

I must have watched this ten times when it played on Showtime back in the late 70's and having just recently purchased it on dvd I am glad to see it not only holds up to my fond childhood memories but it worked on my girlfriend, passing the generational test. We had a blast watching this film for its 70's conception of the future and stay young til you die theme--this is the first time I've seen the film since I was a kid, and the little button in the palm of my hand would have blinked red seven years ago, so it made a different impression on me than it did when I was 10! Yikes!

The amazing costumes and set design look every bit as good today as when this premiered WAY back in the late 20th century and, aside from some unconvincing matte work in the second half of the film, the special effects hold up remarkably well, too.

I was thrilled at the picture and sound quality of this disc;the digitally remastered soundtrack was a serious treat for my rock and roll damaged ears! Anyone who saw this growing up will want it on dvd and they won't be disappointed with the goods offered here. Bravo.
