Movie Reviews of Liza's At the Palace

Movie Review: this gal can "bring it" as they say.....kudos to Liza !!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked this up today ...not being a huge fan and never seeing her live but always enjoying her style as a performer. I was one of those shocked years back when she came out as the grand finale at the tribute to Freddie Mercury...I thought even then she was passe and ultimately understood it as a "gay" thing for Freddie that the remaining members of Queen supported.

I may have even thought I may be witnessing a train wreck when I picked up this disc, but when I put it in my player....

Unlike some of the other reviews I'm not going to discuss her vocal range and timber...although I have many years in the music business and have produced nearly 100 albums. I would like to stress the "entertainment" factor which I find to be off the chart on this project and I found her performance galvanizing!!!

The production values are thankfully first class but its the sheer power and electricity of her performance that put this over the top and make me glad I picked it up. The ultimate compliment I can make where any live/performance DVD is concerned is that it makes me sad I didn't go see the actual tour of the artist and I absolutely would have enjoyed this night. Even though I am not familiar with much of the material she performs ,it didn't really matter, which again just shows how compelling she is. Sometimes vocalists with great gifts fall back on their perfect instrument and don't really engage the audience and sometimes an artist whose instrument isn't what it used to be chooses to dial up the energy to compensate and that might be what we have...but she sings the (you know what) out of every tune and between songs uses her charm and acting chops to keep the audience riveted.

Any fan of hers I would imagine should love this and those who wish to nitpick about her upper register probably can't see the forest for the trees!

Movie Review: "Only One Liza"
Summary: 5 Stars

"Liza's At The Palace" was recorded at the MGM Grand in Vegas on October 1st, 2009 and is her concert rendition of her wonderful return to Broadway after a ten year absence. The concert is divided into two parts: the first features music made famous by Liza herself including "Cabaret" as well as songs made famous by her mother Judy Garland when she did vaudeville; the second part is dedicated to Liza's Godmother Kay Thompson, an amazing performer who taught song and dance at MGM in the '30's and '40's. Liza Minnelli is now 64 years of age and if your expecting the Liza who use to strut across the stage impeccably you will be disappointed. Her voice is not up to par either. These were factors many Broadway critics pointed out in their reviews of this show. However, this is the one and only Liza and she does her best and it shows. She belts out tunes and dances to the best of her ability. Liza gives this performance her all and that is all we as an audience can ask from any entertainer. I finished watching the DVD simply mesmerized after being a Liza fan for over 30 years. There are entertainers, and then there is Liza Minnelli.

Movie Review: Liza is still the best there is
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, so her voice is not what it was 30 years ago. Whose is? Her showmanship is still superb and she presents a show full of non-stop entertainment as no one else can do. "Liza's at the Palace" also presents a look into Liza Minnelli the person and show business icon. She expertly covers her hertiage in a way that is both endearing and electrifying.

Her voice is at its best in "Maybe This Time," "Cabaret", "The World Goes 'Round" and "Mammy", Her interlude with "The Williams Brothers" offers dancing and songs from the 1940's and 1950's that are timeless. It's easy to imagine yourself being in an elite night club of years ago.

The show is expertly produced and staged and is completely enjoyable from start to finish. Liza receives too many standing ovations to count and she deserves them all. You will not regret for one moment buying this DVD proving beyond a doubt Liza Minnelli is a national treasure, the likes of which we're not likely to see again. You'll love her and even if you've never been a fan, you'll not be able to resist. Liza is still the greatest stage performer of them all.

Movie Review: Magical Minnelli tour-de-force~BRAVO LiZa May!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Liza Minnelli has had a wild roller coaster ride of a life in the past decade career wise and in her personal life yet has come out on top with this magnificent performance from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas...make no mistake about it, legendary Liza May Minnelli is back in top form once again and this brilliantly filmed concert is a sublime showcase of her superb singing and performing skill & Minnelli struts her stuff in high style in a passionate performance that will take your breath away! Taped before an adoring crowd in the fall of 2009 after a wildly successful & incredibly great two-night stint at The Hollywood Bowl, clearly Minnelli was ready for her big close-up as this awesome DVD captures the essence of the legendary performer for old fans and an awesome discovery for a whole new generation of new fans to savor and enjoy over and over again. Bravo Liza...you really did made it this time and we are all the more lucky for it!!!

Movie Review: Liza's back
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this concert on the HD NET and enjoyed it. It was released on DVD February 2010. I had recorded the concert on the Dish Network's hard drive. Unfortunately, I erased it a day before the DVD arrived. Is it my imagination? Seems there has been additional material added to the concert I had watched on the HD NET.

She is showing her age but still one of the best entertainers. I noticed she was changing her wigs too? One was much darker than the first one she had on stage. The first one looked real.

The DVD says LIZA AT THE PALACE. But, it was the PALACE in Las Vegas, not the famous Palace in Times Square. That is where I saw her mother in person around 1956. Liza was on stage too, around four years old.

Liza still gives her all and I really liked her performance that was really good in widescreen and digital sound. It's a true collectible and being sold on Amazon.
