Movie Reviews of Living Out LoudMovie Review: One of the best films of the year! Summary: 5 Stars
Living Out Loud is a wonderful story of a woman's search for the strength needed to lead an independent life. Holly Hunter is awesome! (as usual) Both hilarious and heartbreaking, I give this film five stars!
Movie Review: Quirky and Often Heartfelt Look at a Manhattan Divorcee's Survival Tactics Summary: 4 Stars
Screenwriter Richard LaGravenese was able to make something substantive from the hoary novella that was Robert James Waller's "The Bridges of Madison County" aided by Clint Eastwood's assured direction. In his own directorial debut, LaGravenese again shows dexterity with unexpected character development in this self-penned 1998 dramedy. On the surface, the plot is straightforward. Judith, a wealthy, middle-aged Manhattan woman, is reeling from a divorce from her smug doctor husband for whom she gave up her own promising medical career to become a nurse. Pat, the doorman in her building, is also suffering from a bad marriage, has increasing gambling debts, and just lost his daughter. After months of indifference, they finally speak to each other, and he becomes smitten even though she only wants to be friends. Providing sharp, unpredictable dialogue, LaGravenese does not rely on clichés to formulate the characters, and it's the quirky sense of revelation he provides to Judith and Pat that keeps the story consistently engaging. He also effectively inserts fantasy scenes to reflect Judith's wavering state of mind - a technique I haven't seen used as well since Irvin Kershner's "Up the Sandbox" a quarter century earlier.
Casting helps considerably as Holly Hunter and Danny DeVito play Judith and Pat with consummate skill and poignancy. Looking taut, often apoplectic and sometimes quite sexy, Hunter makes Judith a refreshingly multi-dimensional figure, a wounded bird one minute and a cutting harpy the next. I particularly like her curt response to her ex-husband's conciliatory new wife, as well as the effortlessly seductive dance moves she exhibits at a lesbian nightclub. In a surprising display of warmth, DeVito makes Pat a sympathetic character without resorting to either self-pity or smarminess. Vocalizing in a confident, languorous manner, Queen Latifah gives a nicely assured performance as Liz, a nightclub jazz singer with whom Judith bonds. The 1999 DVD includes a thoughtful commentary track from LaGravenese, a strong extra in itself, though it seems a shame in hindsight that they were not able to secure the principal actors to participate. In addition to the original theatrical trailer, there are also five deleted scenes including Queen Latifah's full performance of the standard "Lush Life".
Movie Review: Fabulous Lesbian Dance Scene.. Summary: 4 Stars
The plot is simple, but the movie itself is so much more complex. Holly Hunter recently is dumped by her husband for another woman. She never had her own friends, as all of her friends were her husband's friends. So, she finds herself absurdly alone. She sits in restaurants alone fantasizing that other people invite her over to their table. She fantasizes about striking up conversations with strangers, when she actually is too timid to. With nobody to answer to, she starts going out on the town at night by herself. She begins to meet all kinds of wonderful and bizaare people. Night club singer Queen Latifah gives her a hit of 'Ecstasy', and she finds herself entering a gay bar in one of the most sensual and memorable dance scenes you will ever see on film. She then realizes the confinement that marriage has given her. That there is so much living out there. She becomes a new person and once again pursues the dreams she had before she gave them up to be the doctor's wife. **Fabulous Movie** It is all about learning to live again.
Movie Review: Reviewer Edward Smith is Absolutely Right Summary: 4 Stars
I first saw this film at the movies in 1998. That "movie moment" described by Mr. Smith, the dance scene at the night club, has remained etched in my memory for the past 5 years. The sensuality of that moment, and the song that they chose to play with it, is just incredible. That's what got me to rent the movie this weekend, and I'm probably going to buy it. As a matter of fact, the music is so good in this film that I rushed out to buy the soundtrack right after I left the movie theater. Queen Latifah is fantastic with her singing and acting, and Holly Hunter looks spectacular and does a spectacular job. There are some real nice scenes with her internal dialogue. Wonderful film!
Movie Review: Very Artsy but something special about it! 50's like done 90 Summary: 4 Stars
There is something very artsy about this movie but it reminds me of those great movies when I was a kid. located in those great New York apartments and the characters are the main point of the move.. not the specail effects. The photography is great and hunter and devito do a fantastic job! But a real amazing shocker is Queen Latifa doing some serious great Jazz.. wish she had a whole album out there like that I would buy it! Watching Hunter learn to love herself after a horrible divorce and a marriage of compromise.. she is happy and learns to love what is in her life.
