Movie Review: A Movie that Defies its Own Plot
Summary: 5 Stars
A woman lost in her own life finds herself after a bitter divorce. Sound cliche? I thought so too. Somehow, this movie defies its own plot and points out truths in society without being cute, without being predictable, and without smothering anybody with a happy ending. This movie is based on reality, not a Hollywood script.The beauty of this movie is its universality. Everyone can find someone to identify with; Hunter, DeVito, and Latifah all play vastly different characters in this movie and each lends a new dimension of reality and honesty to the film.
This movie is full of meaning and definetely worth owning.
Movie Review: A wonderful character study

This is one of the best character movies I've seen. It's billed as a "chick flick", but Danny DeVito's character broadens the story beyond merely a womens' story. The dialogue is intelligent and real. Best of all, it doesn't have a stock "they lived happily ever after" ending.
No, that's not what's best of all...Queen Latifah's singing is incredible, and provides an extra level of enjoyment to an already greatly enjoyable movie. I highly recommend the soundtrack!
P.S. Another character in the movie also does a singing turn, and not a bad job!

aside from the reviews posted here i had no idea what to expect-but what i got was a terrific flick with great heart and greater performances from holly hunter and a very subdued danny devito. queen latifah's rendition of 'LUSH LIFE" was remarkable! the digital sound and picture quality were of the highest caliber. i highly recommend it to everyone-this was one of the best films i have seen in years.Movie Review: Rating for content only

This is a wonderful film. The DVD is, however, not the greatest in quality. Read what Widescreen Review said, located elsewhere with these reviews. They give you a good idea of what to expect. I was glad I read their rating info before purchasing, so I didn't cry buckets of tears when I saw the DVD. I was prepared. I still enjoy the movie, but it's a shame it wasn't given a better transfer.Movie Review: Delightful Suprise

Picked it up because I just wanted to see a silly sentimental "chick flick". What I got instead was an incredibly moving character study which haunted me for days afterward. Some very amusing and memorable scenes punctuate this lovely film. A wonderful movie I rented, bought, gave away, and look forward to buying again. Truly a gem.
