Movie Review: A Magical Evening......

This concert DVD conveys very warm colours, recorded with multiple camera's in a cosy setting throbbing with energy.
Youssou N'Dour is successful because he is one of the few African artists who has, besides the obligatory sense of rhythm, a knack for strong melodies and catchy refrains. His instrumetarium stretches from the ancient traditional drums and xylophones, to cutting edge synthesizers and beat-machines. Yet he does not sacrifice the polyrhythmic complexities of West African music for that easy 4/4 pop idiom that breezes along anchored by a predictable backbeat. To top it all off, his lyrics tackle serious social and political issues without turning his tunes into sombre, whining complaints. On the contrary, the music oozes optimism, pride and hope.
The DVD is a worthy addition to any collection of music that reflects the sound of urban Africa today.
