Movie Reviews of Live Aid (4 Disc Set)Movie Review: Amazing Perfomances Summary: 5 Stars
This 4-disc-DVD set is awesome !
Even there are two ours of footage missing, we should be happy with what this DVD-box delivers.
I also would have liked to see the whole set of George Thorogood and The Destroyers. And i knew the Led Zep's performance wasn't really the best on that day.
But all in all, i don't give a damn about it - The booklet clearly explaines why some parts were not included or available.
The Sets of The Who, Bryan Adams, Pretenders, Dire Straits, David Bowie, Elton John (also performing with Kiki-Dee and George Michael) and Mick Jagger with Tina Turner are really enjoyable.
I like Elvis Costello's rendition of "All You Need Is Love"
The stand out performances are propably U2 and Queen:
U2 rocking great with Bloody Sunday and playing a superb version of Bad. Bono dancing with a girl from the audience !! !!
This is really a memorable moment of the day.
And Queen, playing the most energetic set of the day, with the incomparable Freddie Mercury commanding wembley and the world through a stunning 20-minute-performance.
Buy this for the great performances and for the good cause !
Movie Review: Historical & Touching Summary: 5 Stars
Well, I must have been one of the 2 or 3 people who had never seen Live Aid. Heard about it, just never seen it. Ironically, I grew up very attached to music. So, I was not going to pass up the chance to get this DVD.
First off, I will be the first to say that there is a lot on this DVD set that simply does not interest me. Maybe 4-6 performances per disc are all that I seem to enjoy. But what I learned from this DVD was invaluable. The segments from the BBC broadcasts that explains the famine and destitution that strike Ethiopia were eye openers as to what others are going through in life. When I read the booklet included with the DVD and watched my favorites from each disc, it was as if I had just been through a well deserved history lesson. We should not be blind to these horrors simply because they aren't afflicting us.
Honestly, I felt proud after watching this. Proud that humanity still exists, proud that these artists donated their time, proud that I now understand better what is going on in other parts of the world. This DVD truly is historical and documents the power of us all.
Movie Review: Insightful Sleeve Notes Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD set recorded a memorable event. It's final release will trigger a lot of youth sediments in people who grew up in the 80's like me, and that should be a very good reason for people to have to own this DVD set, in addition to the fact that the proceeds will go to charity as well. Same as others, I do miss of a lot of artists/sessions which are left out. But what I really want to say is: don't forget to read the excellent sleeve notes that come with this DVD. They tell us what Live Aid really is in the bigger context of world injustice. They tell us why Live Aid did not solve the problem of Third World poverty, and how Bob Geldof has taken on a journey from charity to justice after the event. They also hinted why another Live Aid has not occurred in almost two decades. I feel that these issues are far more important than why certain artist is or is not included in this DVD (which is also explained in the notes if one needs to know why). And teenagers in the 80's should now be mature enough to have realized the deeper meaning of this historical event, just as Bob Geldof has.
Movie Review: READ THIS REVIEW! Summary: 5 Stars
You must buy this DVD set, here's why:
First of all, there are people starving in Africa, and you will be helping them. 'nuf said about that.
But what were they thinking when they priced this set? $28. for 4 discs of this unbelieveably important historical presentation? I would have paid $100. This is GROSSLY underpriced. The video quality is better than I expected considering the age of the production and the fact that it was never supposed to be recorded in the first place.
Yes, there are performances missing from this set. The booklet inside explains why -- from technical glitches (generator exploded) to lost/missing reels. But who cares? There are 10 hours worth of phenominal performances in this set!
Suspiciously missing is backstage footage, interviews, follow-up interviews all these years later (where's Sir Bob's take on this whole thing?), etc. I hope there will be a 20th Anniversary Platinum Edition or something like that with more stuff.
Meanwhile, BUY THIS SET, you'll be very glad you did!
Movie Review: Just Buy It Summary: 5 Stars
I can't believe all the griping that is going on about this DVD set. Its for the benefit of a good cause. From Led Zeppelin and other artists and songs being omitted to the quality of the video. What a bunch of whiny "consumers" we are. How quickly we forget the spirit in which this event took place.
Buy one for yourself. Buy copies for your friends and family. Its only a little but its better than nothing. Don't buy pirated copies and don't encourage others to seek out pirated copies. Its shameful people are willing to sell pirated copies for personal gain.
I too watched this day long event glued to my TV set sharing this experience with the rest of the world. There is so much to enjoy on this DVD set. A true moment of grace when pop music put into action some of the idealism they put into their songs.
Thank you Bob Geldof. Thanks to all the artists involved. And thanks to all who made this happen. I will treasure this DVD along with my old 45RPM copy of "Do They Know Its Christmas".
