Movie Reviews of Live Aid (4 Disc Set)Movie Review: Full pot for the intentions of humanity behind the release! Summary: 5 Stars
In the end that's all that matters, and what the whole thing was and is about!
The quality of sound and picture (as explained in the dvd-book) is not as good as I had hoped for it to be, I actually thought there'd be a dts-version of Do They Know It's Christmas in my naivity, but of course entertainment is far from the only reason for this release. Far from.
I was only six years old in 1985, so I did not have many memories from this great event taking place at Wembley, Philadelphia and on TV of course, when me and my friends gathered up infront of the tv to watch this circus of the worlds' greatest artists at the time joining eachother in the attempt to try and make the world a better place. But for some reason I remembered Dire Straits because of the cool guitar-riffs on Money For Nothing, and I also remembered Sting in dueth with Mark Knopfler (though at the time I had no idea who he was : today my favorite artist actually).
Musically, and the performances considered, Sting does a great contribution here, but it actually never quite "lifts the roof" with any of the artists before Queen enters the stage. They steal the show, without doubt - and now, finally, I understand the sence of this statement, the performance of Queen is the most rememberable of Live AID. And Mercury beats them all, and thanks to the release of this dvd - he'll always do.
Great show, greatest consept. Still saving lives!
Movie Review: Let Them Know It's Christmas! Summary: 5 Stars
A couple of reviewers here have trashed this DVD set because Led Zeppelin and Rick Springfield aren't on it. The reason Led Zeppelin weren't included on this set was because they didn't want to be included. From a BBC news report dated August 4: A statement from the members said: "Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones are in absolute full support of the fundraising project for the people of Sudan. However, Jimmy, Robert and John Paul found that both the sound and general reproduction of their performance at Live Aid Philadelphia was substandard." As for Rick Springfield, one of his songs is included among the extras. Virtually every act had some songs cut on the DVD, with the exception I think of Queen, who thankfully have their entire set included (if memory serves, there were six songs in their set). I would have liked every song presented that day from every band, live or via video, to be on this set but I guess an extra disc or two might have made it more expensive, thus inaccessible to less affluent people. But one can look at the tracklistings and extras at liveaiddvd.net and they'll see that there is still a wealth of good stuff in this compilation! Really, most of the bands and songs are on the DVD! And come on people, the proceeds from this set are going to a good cause. Spread a little Christmas cheer this year for yourselves and for others and get into the spirit of this unforgettable, amazing event!
Movie Review: The Greatest Pop Culture event of the 20th Century... on DVD Summary: 5 Stars
I remember where I was on July 13th, 1985...at home in Monterrey, Mexico very angry that our country was way behind others technologically speaking and; therefore, not having cable systems and missing out on what the rest of the world was enjoying...THE greatest Pop Culture event of the Century. All we got was a 2 hour special that same night on a nationwide TV station that showed about 10-12 performances by 10-12 different acts (with commercial breaks between each and every performance).
All these years I had waited for some footage; at least the audio on CD, but there was no news. I was not aware that Geldof had requested that the event NOT be recorded for future entertainment...it's a good thing the BBC didn't listen to him.
Now; 20 years later, I am able to enjoy what was done in London and Philadelphia. Some reviewer says that 85 songs are missing; hey buddy, there's almost 10 hours of performances here and for someone who almost saw NOTHING AT ALL, this is a truckload.
My review is basically that the audio is very good and the video is near perfect because; although 20 years old, looks perfectly preserved. Bonuses here are the complete music videos for Do they know it's Xmas time? and We are the world, both in high quality.
My word to you, get it, enjoy it and don't lend it. This is something that SHOULD be placed in those time capsules for future generations to learn about.
Movie Review: Finally!!! Summary: 5 Stars
My sister actually told me about this, I got it for her for Xmas and bought one for myself as well. The news footage made me cry. Seeing the "Do they know its Christmas" video brought me back to my youth, I was still able to name most of the people in the video. I never liked "We are the world", I always thought it was a poor comparison to Band Aid. The documentary on the last DVD was great, I always wanted to know how everything came together. Watching David Bowie sing Heros and Bob Geldof singing I Dont Like Mondays in the documentary made me cry. I was crying a lot watching this :-) UltraVox was EXCELLENT!!!! Dancing with Tears in my Eyes and Vienna...they gave their all. Why they never made it big in the US is beyond me. Midge Ure has one of the best voices out there. I became a fan again of theirs. Queen was EXCELLENT!!! It also made me cry watching them, Freddie was a very talented singer and it makes me sad that he is gone. The WHO was great. The Boomtown Rats were Great. David Bowie, Duran Duran, U2, Sting, Phil Collins, Brian Ferry. It makes me wish we had more bands like them right now.
I was 16 when the concert was held. I was only able to see a few bands that day, my mom refused to allow us to sit infront of the TV all day. I am glad I was able to see it now, even though it is not the whole concert. Buy this DVD, it is for a good cause. If I remember the money will be going to Band Aid.
Movie Review: A Historical Document Summary: 5 Stars
I was a bit hesitant about buying this DVD set at first, feeling like I would only enjoy a small part of this 10 hour+ event (although, as noted by many, that much more music is unfortunately lost). I am so happy I made this purchase!!! I am a big fan of some of the lost footage (i.e.: Led Zepplin reunion, additional Elton John, Neil Young & The Cars music) and would have paid three times the price to have it but this is still incredible entertainment. I am not a big fan of mid-80's music but there is something for everyone on here. Many of the artists are still popular today (it's fun to watch them early in their career).
I still can't believe that this incredible set is LESS THAN $30.00!!! AND IT STILL BENEFITS THE RELIEF EFFORT!!!
The audio quality is superb and the video is a 4 star picture (which is great for a 20 year old, outdoor, live televised broadcast from 2 continents that was not intended to be recorded and sold).
Viewing the emotional, heartbreaking news documentary, the video's of "Band Aid" and "USA for Africa" that begin the set and pick a few of your favorite groups are well worth the money. Seeing Freddy Mercury perform is priceless. God Bless Bob Geldof and all the other hard working, dedicated individuals for putting on this event that still means as much today as it did then.
THIS IS TRULY A VISUAL AND AUDIO PLEASURE!!!
