Movie Reviews of Live Aid (4 Disc Set)Movie Review: If you love music, you need this DVD! Summary: 5 Stars
I just got this today, and it is incredible! I was too young (3 years old) to see the original, so for me, this is the closest I'll ever get to seeing it live, and it's worth every penny and then some! While some did mention missing performances, you'll never notice unless you're looking for them, the included ones are so great! I was a little nervous about technical difficulties myself, but other than some occasional "banding" (lines across the screen) it's flawless. And even that is only noticeable in certain particularly loud spots (as described in the program) and doesn't take anything away from the show. I am really impressed at how seamless the transition from UK to US and back again throughout the program went. You wouldn't even know it sometimes if it weren't for the stage differences. Truly great work on here!
Also, this is an absolute MUST for any Queen fan out there! Freddie and the guys are in rare form; the crowd just goes nuts for them!
Of course, beyond the musical entertainment is the much more serious facts that led to the event to begin with: people fighting, and more often than not, failing, to survive in Africa. It's incredible to realize that wealthy countries such as the US have done so little to help such a poor country. It's not like we don't have the resources!
Okay, I'll step down from my soapbox now. But seriously, go get this thing. Whether you want to relive seeing it before, or are seeing it for the very first time, you'll never regret it!
Movie Review: The Spirit Of Live Aid Is Back 20 Years Later Summary: 5 Stars
As someone who was too young to remember Live Aid, I can say I can appreciate the fact that Bob Geldof finally gave permission to release this DVD.
The performances and the quality of sound for archives over 20 years old is amazing. This DVD was put together from aging archives that the BBC never threw out or destroyed from Wembley including the entire Queen performance that has become the talk of legends. MTV gave archive footage they had of the JFK/American portion of the concert. Bob Geldof wanted the footage destroyed and wanted this to only be shown as it happened that day in 1985, it seemed as if this magical event could have never been destroyed or hidden from future generations.
The performances are breath taking. Queen, Phil Collins, Sting, The Boomtown Rats, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Duran Duran, Status Quo, Paul McCartney, Ultravox, Adam Ant..
You also get a good look at how the concert was put together, how Band Aid was put together, the situation of 1984-1985 Ethiopia, and a documentary of how the aid money was delivered and spent showing the effects of it on people they were able to give food and supplies to.
So, for the price, this is a great way to remember this once in a lifetime event that moved people and brought people together to end the famine in Ethiopia. Nothing has ever matched this event, and no one has done what Bob Geldof has done and not even The Beastie Boys for Tibet.
Movie Review: Queen stole the show. the best live performance of all time! Summary: 5 Stars
Amazing , i must say i'm a big fan of queen. i bought all their videos, dvd concerts and the only live concert i couldn't get was their live performance on live aid.
i've heard of commentaries of many artist who performed on live aid, that said that queen stole the show, and i don't know why, i heard of this concert as one of the best concerts of all time and there played varios famous artist as well. so why queen stole the show? maybe it had to be that good. so i was wainting for this release for a long time.
finnaly it's out, and after watching the whole queen performance on live aid, it just amazing, the performance on live aid was the best they have done in all their career, and the best performance of all time in any live concert. it's outstanding.
You should know that at that time queen was not so good, due some problems with the media, and maybe because of an failure album they made in those years, even Queen wasn't supossed to perform on live aid, they were invited on the last minute. so the people who went to wembley stadium, wasn't fans of queen at all.
but when they played 'Radio ga ga' all people went mad, then played 'Crazy little thing called loved' and the people where crazy even more, imagine when they played 'we will rock you' and 'we are the champions'. you have to see how the media took photos of the people singing 'we are the champions of the world!, Amazing.....
queen performance paid the $27.99 itself for the entire dvd set.
Movie Review: I Was There, Now I Can Remember It!! Summary: 5 Stars
I was at the show in Philly that day. For the reviewers who ask why the U.S. audience was so listless, here are some reasons:
1) It was nearly 100 degrees out, with hazy sun, and 100 percent humidity. Most of us were in the stadium from eight o'clock in the morning. Absolutely no shade. Only a few bathrooms. We were baked.
2) Very hard to get food and water. Limited concessions, totally overwhelmed. In the afternoon, about 30 of us began to hang off of one of the water pipes in the bathroom, finally breaking it for drinking water and a much needed shower.
3) The field was covered in some sort of lime green cotton padding. By early afternoon, it became soaked in sweat and other fluids, becoming a slimy slippery stinking mess. Completely disgusting.
4) The absolutely best part of the show, we watched on a crappy big-screen TV, about 5 years before jumbotrons became a viable option. The pixels were the size of spotlights.
By the time the sun began to fall and it cooled down a bit, we found new energy. The highlight was when they showed the video of Mick Jagger and David Bowie doing "Dancing In The Streets", followed by Mick and Tina's set. The whole place came alive!!
The music in both shows was remarkable and diverse. No one at the show would say that they didn't get great value for a great cause. I must say that that was the most exhausted I've ever been.
Having the video to remember it is priceless!
Movie Review: Absolutely amazing Summary: 5 Stars
I was so blown away by this set. It is incredible! Any serious rock music fan MUST add this to their collection. I hate to admit it, but when this first broadcast on TV I was very young and didn't have much interest in it. I only caught pieces of it back then. But now we can sit back and pretty much enjoy most of the show! Highlights: Adam Ant (in his prime!), Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys (looking much younger and fit), Queen (they stole the show, as they often did!), Elvis Costello standing on stage entirely by himself, just playing a guitar and singing with the audience singing along with him...breathtaking!, Ultravox doing an awesome rendition of "Vienna", Howard Jones doing a great version of "Hide and Seek" and so many others, too many to name here. This brought back so many good memories of that time. I even enjoyed watching the bands that I am not a big fan of, if only to see those wild 80s fashions! :) I was also a bit disappointed that "Tears Are Not Enough" was not included. I thought the sound quality was fine....sure it wasn't perfect but what do you expect from a live show recorded on tape 20 years ago that was never intended to be viewed again? The white lines across the screen during some of the performances were a bit distracting (I guess its due to microphany) but you get used to it after a while. Overall an outstanding set that I will enjoy for years to come! Well worth the money!!!!
