Movie Reviews of Little Women (1933)Movie Review: Good for it's time, but the acting just doesn't hold up. Summary: 3 Stars
I just borrowed this one from the library. For the most part it is a very faithful adaptation of the beloved novel (which I finished reading two days before viewing this version). Unfortunately, some parts are too faithful - like the first fifteen or twenty minutes. This part is almost verbatim from the book and was soooooo slow! I was worried that the entire movie would be this way and be six hours long. Thank goodness the screenwriters began condensing after this long opening sequence.
The actresses playing the four March sisters did a good job but they all looked approximately the same age leaving no room for age progression throughout the movie. The acting was okay for its time - but by today's standards it comes off as very melodramatic. Hepburn was a suitably tomboyish Jo but even she had her unintentional laughable moments - particularly the "swoon" as Prof. Bhaer was playing the piano and singing. That scene really made us laugh. But not as much as Jo's surprise reaction to Laurie's appearance in the attic upon his return from Europe. I can't do it justice by describing it - you've got to see it. I didn't think my daughter would ever stop laughing.
Movie Review: cukor & hepburn would go on to better things Summary: 3 Stars
katharine hepburn heads the cast in george cukors too respectful treatment of the louisa may alcott novel. a pleasant enuf way to spend a couple hours, but i wouldnt seek it out.
Movie Review: Good Version Summary: 3 Stars
Product met my expectations and arrived in a timely fashion. Very happy with both shipment and service, along with a good product. I recommend this to customers for a future purchase.
Movie Review: Buy the June Allyson version Summary: 1 Stars
I was very disappointed by the Katharine Hepburn version. My advice is if you want an older version [than the 1994 Winona Ryder version], buy the 1949 (June Allyson).
The Katharine Hepburn film lacks character development and story detail- to the point of being disjointed, unless you fill in the blanks from having read the book. Although Katharine is (perhaps) a prettier Jo, she doesn't convey emotion or the bond with Beth as believably as June does. I also prefer Janet Leigh as Meg and Margaret O'Brien as Beth, not to mention the actresses for Marmee... 1949 is far better than 1933. Further, in the Katharine Hepburn version the vocabulary is more stilted and repetitive. ("elegant" is extremely over-used in this film... take a scene at Mr. Lawrence's party: Amy played by Elizabeth Taylor says of Mr. L "isn't he perfectionary?", while the Joan Bennett Amy says "isn't he elegant?" Just doesn't have the same impact.)
All-in-all, the June Allyson version is my personal favorite, though the Winona Ryder version is also good... keeping in mind that the characters in the 1994 version have a bit of a modern way about them that doesn't seem in keeping with the attention to historical and literary accuracy that otherwise marks the film. Also, if you are concerned about Christian modesty, the 1994 version has a rather risqué scene (Sally Gardner's "coming out"), complete with innuendo by Laurie.
Movie Review: Not so great Summary: 1 Stars
There are three versions of little women, and this would have to be my least favorite. the only good thing about this movie is Katherine! She gives a great preformance as the charactor, but that's the only thing that keeps this movie at being one star movie apposed to being a complete drag. I probably wouldn't actually choose to watch this moovie again. If you're are looking for a really good version, try the 1949 version with June Allyson,Mary Astor, Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Margret O'Brien, and Peter Lawford.Or try the 1994 version with Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, and Gabriel Byrne just to name a few. Both are wonderful, and worth watching again and again.
