Movie Reviews of Little Women (1933)

Movie Review: Kate and Jo
Summary: 5 Stars

Katherine Hepburn brings the Little Women heroine Jo March alive in a portrayal that truly does justice to the Jo that Louisa May Alcott wrote. Courageous and creative, but socially awkward, Jo charms us with her tomboy attempts to deal with adolescence during the difficulties of the Civil War. Though a film is of necessity a rather shortened version of a book, the essential feel of the book is intact in this film version.

Movie Review: This one never grows old
Summary: 5 Stars

I now own three versions of this wonderful movie. As far as I know this was the original version. I also have the June Allyson/Elizabeth Taylor/Janet Leight/Margaret O'Brian version and the more recent version featuring Winona Ryder and others. I usually watch all three, one after another, and enjoy each of them to the fullest. I love surfing amazon.com to discover another treasure, usually from the past.

Movie Review: Hepburn, Cukor and a heavenly script
Summary: 5 Stars

Winona Ryder and June Allyson don't belong on the same planet as Hepburn, who simply is Jo. The script is wonderfully intelligent; and catches all the right moments in just the right tone. And Cukor's direction is perfection. I used to scout for art theaters and scour tv listings to catch this version. Such a pleasure to have it on DVD.

My daughter asked for the older versions of Little Women for Christmas this year. She was able to share this classic with her four daughters and they all enjoyed the quality performances.Little Women (1933)

Movie Review: The original, first and the best!
Summary: 5 Stars

Subsequent versions have been made of the classic Louisa M. Alcott novel, but the first film, starring Katerine Hepburn, is the best. She is my favorite Jo.
