Movie Reviews of Little ChildrenMovie Review: So many damaged people in one place... Summary: 5 Stars
Todd Field is certainly the master of character study, as proven here and in the riveting "In the Bedroom". He creates a world unto itself; indeed, there seems to be nowhere else of interest. I apparently liked this film more than some of my reviewing predecessors, and I found no problem at all with the narration. It filled in a LOT of holes. Of course, the characters are the centerpiece, and Mr. Field has assembled a magnificent cast, first and foremost, Ms. Winslet, a meaty part underplayed to perfection. She's more than a carricature of the bored suburban housewife. Patrick Wilson is fine, as is Jennifer Connelly. Jackie Earle Haley certainly deserved the accolades bestowed upon him; a wonderful portrayal of hopelessness amidst the crazier people around him. I'll have to watch "Breaking Away" immediately... I especially liked Noah Emmerich as the blustery bully, so clueless! Everything else has been said before, but it's a fine character study and I was entertained. My problem with the DVD is that there are NO extras at all. Bummer...
Movie Review: Another Winslet Winner Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best films of 2006. The acting is excellent all around and the screenplay is literate and darkly humorous. It is the humor which makes this superior to 'In the Bedroom' in my opinion. I even enjoyed the narration, a ploy that rarely adds to the enjoyment level of a film. I thought it was hilarious when the narrator spoke during the football game making it sound like one of those 'NFL Films' we've all seen.
Winslet and Wilson play the central characters here and it's a testament to their fine performances that they are so likable, even though their actions are less than admirable. I was also impressed that a star like Connelly was willing to suppress her ego and take such a small supporting role. I don't think she has ever appeared so beautiful on film before which makes Winslet's reaction upon first seeing her all the more priceless.
This easily joins another film from 2006 with the word children in the title (Children of Men) as my favorites of the year.
Movie Review: What American Beauty wants to be when it grows up! Summary: 5 Stars
I found American Beauty a bit overwrought and inauthentic in terms of how it cast it's urbanely judgemental eye on suburbia. But this movie? Never for a moment does it feel condescending to it's characters. In fact, while watching it I couldn't believe I kept thinking "wow, she's just like Andrea from down the street-geesh, he's just like Martha's husband." This film got "it" right.
My favorite thing about this movie is just when you think it's either going to veer off into something overly self serious or self indulgent, you are quickly served with a "aha-fooled you!" And in the most insightful ways too-just when y ou think your characters have totally lost it or something horrible is going to happen, something ELSE mundane actually weighs everything down and the characters are grounded back in reality whether they like it or not! Isn't that how life is though?
Patrick Wilson is freaking pitch perfect as Brad and deserved an Oscar nom for this, and Kate is a revelation as usual.
Movie Review: VERY "REAL" AND MOVING. Summary: 5 Stars
I JUST WATCHED THIS MOVIE AND THE ACTING WAS EXTREMELY GOOD, WHICH DIDN'T OVERLY SURPRISE ME, CONSIDERING THE ACTORS INVOLVED.
I AGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEWER THAT JACKIE EARLE HALEY DID AN EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT JOB OF PORTRAYING HIS TROUBLED CHARACTER.
MY HEART FELT THE DEPTH OF HIS ANGUISH. HE DID NOT WANT TO BE THE WAY HE WAS.
THE MOVIE ISN'T TOO CLEAR IF HE WAS A VICTIM OF ABUSE HIMSELF, WHICH LED HIM TO HIS SICKNESS - ALTHOUGH IT WOULDN'T SURPRISE ME.
THE FACT THAT HE CRIED THAT "MY MOMMY WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT EVER LOVED ME", IS SUSPICIOUS.
I PERSONALLY, WAS MORE RIVITED BY THAT PARTICULAR PART OF THE STORY LINE BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH RISKY SUBJECT MATTER, AND ISN'T TREATED THAT OFTEN IN FILMS.
THE ENDING IN GENERAL WAS MORE UPLIFTING THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.
I CRIED AT THE END AND FELT THAT IT WAS THE MOST HUMANELY REDEEMING SCENE I'VE SEEN IN FILM OR IN REAL LIFE IN A LONG TIIME. (THE SCENE WITH HALEY & EMMERICH)
Movie Review: Depth and meaning Summary: 5 Stars
This movie ends a bit abruptly, but take the time to think through everything you've seen before making a snap judgment about the characters and the "message" of the movie. Despite its reputation, this is not an "anti-suburbia," "anti-family," "anti-stay-at-home-mom" (or anti-whatever!!!) movie, if you really stop and put the pieces together. The characters had great depth and were not the mere charicatures you might have seen in other films. The acting is terrific, the dialogue well-written, and the outcome unpredictable. Do not rent or buy this movie if you're looking for a feel-good laugh fest! Although there is some dark wry humor here, it tackles some weighty issues and has some moments that some people might find disturbing. In the end, though, I was left with a sense of redemption for these people and really felt that the major characters had undergone significant change and found some kind of peace in their lives.
