The Jean Claude Van Damme Review Matrix (JCVD-RM)
1. Who is he? Lyon Gaultier, a disgruntled, often disciplined French Legionnaire stationed in Africa
2. Which family member/friend must be avenged? His brother François, who gets torched to a crisp after reneging on a drug deal
3. Does he take his shirt off? As a stowaway on a ship to America, Lyon is forced to shovel coal into the boilers of the boiler room. And, whew!, does it ever get hot down there!
4. Does he have sex with a C-List actress? No, despite the fact that a rich, psychopathic, sadistic blonde fight organizer named Cynthia basically threw herself at him
5. Is there a tournament? More or less, only, winners advance to bigger and more lucrative matches with each victory
6. Is training needed for this tournament? Not specifically. His military training and hard labor already prepared him for battle.
7. Does he do the splits in training or in the tournament? Sadly, unless mid-air splits count, the answer is no.
8. Does he punch someone in the balls? With a well-placed single shot in his initial organized bare-knuckle fight, Lyon destroys the reproductive future for a guy who looks like the biker from the Village People.
9. Does he do a series of flying or 360 kicks? The question isn't "does he", it should be "where does he". The answer: In a racquetball court, under a bridge, in a nearly empty swimming pool, and a small arena with stands.
10. Is his enemy unbeatable? Atilla basically looks like the guy one-step-to-the-left on the Evolutionary chart. Additionally, he has saxophone-sized mutton-chop sideburns, which is scary in and of itself.
11. Does he overcome an injury or other hindrance? In a previous battle, Lyon sustains a broken rib, and some betting against him know it.
12. Does he win? Yes, and it's a near perfect ending.
It's uncanny how talented JCVD is at making this type of movie. If it were anyone else, the corniness would be much worse. It's almost as if his poor acting (despite this being his best acting job) makes this type of movie better. JCVD is like epicac; under normal circumstances, it's not great to chug a bottle, but when mixed with the consumption of something sure to turn your stomach otherwise, it's perfect. Best of all, the little girl who plays Lyon's niece Nicole (Ashley Johnson) is absolutely adorable (later went on to be Mel Gibson's daughter in What Women Want), and adds a real humanistic aspect to the movie without getting in the way of the tumultuous action.
Movie Review: Lionheart starts out with a guy getting set on fire and it stays hot until the end Summary: 4 Stars
Lionheart stars Jean-Claude Van Damme. So, obviously it is an Unintentional Comedy Action flick. However, we, Sid the Elf, were not expecting such a strong effort. You had Frank Dux back for another round of whippings, you had the black detective from...wait for it...Death Ring!!!!!!! That's right, a Death Ring alum. Instant 2 stars. Then, to put the cherry on the sundae we had Freddy Bisco from Scent of a Woman, and the bad guy from Cobra!
Lionheart was a classically styled B-action. It had a lot of techniques from the Frank Leone(Sylvester Stallone) school of filmmaking. Van Damme was the tough fighter with a heart of gold. Teamed with the jive talking brother from Death Ring, they were the hottest onscreen couple we've seen in a long time. They even had the hug at the end instead of Van Damme and a chick. Sketchy, right? You have cheesey music which seeems to rev Van Damme's engine. You had plot streches as far as the eye could see. Van Damme jumps off a freight ship moving who-knows-how-fast in the middle of the night and swims to the shore of New York. Then, he decides to enter the glamorous world of fight clubbing. He literally starts off at the bottom, fighting homeless guys for food under a bridge. Let us interject for a second that if you're B in your own B movie, that's probably not a good sign for the future. Anyway, the guy from Death Ring "discovers" Van Damme and starts managing him. Ace and Gary win a few fights and make it to L.A., the big time as far as underground fighting in those days. But, they still live together in a small apartment. Hmmm. While in L.A. Dux stalks some family and kicks some major tail. He's even such an entrancing figure that the authorities are in awe of his lionheart and don't mess with him.
So, Lionheart earns the Sid the Elf Seal of Approval. It is king of the jungle. Well kids, it's getting mighty close to Christmas time, so Sid will be slowing down for a while. There are many pink turkey basters to make. But he will be doing reviews as often as he can!!!!!!!
Movie Review: the movie has heart Summary: 4 Stars
Lionheart is one of Van-Damme's better movies. It is filled with great fighting, decent characters, and a good story.
Van Damme plays a French Legionnaire named "Leone", who escapes to America, where his brother has been killed. In an attempt to help his sister-in-law and niece, Leone enters the underground of fighting for money to help them out, where he becomes known as "Lionheart". The movie displays, through its story, that a good heart eventually defeats all forms of evil and deception.
The fights are awesome in the movie, as well as the fight locales ranging from a parking garage, a raquetball court, and even a near-empty pool. The final fight is between Lionheart and a massive fighter named "Atilla" (who also played the deadly Mongolian fighter in Van Damme's movie "The Quest"). The fight displays great Van Damme kicks, lots of blood, and lasts about 7 minutes.
If you love underground fighting for a variety of fights, Lionheart will definetly please. You even get a decent story with a happy ending as a bonus.
Movie Review: he's the fastest fugitve and the best fighter. Summary: 4 Stars
lionheart is a film which is mostly about family, when van-damme is in a french prison for drugs which he did not commit,he has to run away with a only six month sentance because his brother was burnt in a drug problem, when he escapes two french officers come to look for him in america where his other family is, when van-damme reaches america and meets his family he saw that they were in a very big money problem, van-damme decides to fight for money and becomes a trained fighter ,getting a lot of money after fight's and fight's he is nearly ready for his family to leave the bad neighbourd until the french officers are on his back. the last fight is amazing and the best scene in the film. In britain this film is called a.w.o.l which stands for absent without leave.
Movie Review: Low Budget But Worth Every Penny Summary: 4 Stars
Van Damme portrays a streetfighter who gets caught up in the middle of a raw fighting hard hitting circuit. He keeps fighting to raise money for his brothers family who needs the money or they'll become homeless. The storyline is cheap and the flick itself is low budget but the fight scenes are supurb and the acting on Van Dammes part is excellent. In my opinion of course this movie is the greatest low budget action film available on the market today,if you like martial-arts films instead of explosions and basic killing spree action films than lionheart is your ticket to everything you want to see...Enjoy!
