Movie Reviews of LimboMovie Review: John Sayles Best - Highly Underrated and Underappreciated Summary: 5 Stars
I just got finished watching this movie for about the 4th time since it first came out in 2000, and every time I watch it I enjoy it more. As all these other reviews will testify, this is an underappreciated JEM ! The cast is incredible, cinematography is wonderful. In addition, there are two AMAZING things about this film. One- I've never seen a film start off for the first half with a script that is almost soap-opera-ish and you find yourself actually thinking that the acting talent is too good for the material, when all of a sudden in the second half (this film really is in two acts) the dialogue just dives deep like a submarine. Second, is the young actress that plays the daughter, Vanessa Martinez. She is INCREDIBLE. She should have recieved an Oscar nod for her performance, it's THAT good!! If you haven't seen this movie yet, and love a nice character-driven story, then buy a used copy asap and ENJOY!
Movie Review: Another masterpiece of John Sayles Summary: 5 Stars
After "Lone Star", my favorite movie, comes "Limbo", a wondefully told story of a lonely people finding each other to form a new family in rather difficult circumstances...Starting as a character study of people living in Alaska, and giving an insight in their way of thinking and their daily lives (similar to the way how he showed the problems and issues of the communicty of Rio County in "Lone Star"), the story evolves in an adventure movie of a family threatened by drug dealers, alone on a remote island without much hope to get back to civilization. The very special ending of the movie is brilliant and allows us to make our own imagination work... The scenery is just wonderful and the the actors very convincing in their roles. It's nice to meet Kris Kristofferson again :-)
Movie Review: More great storytelling by John Sayles Summary: 5 Stars
Sayles scores again with this substantial story about a woman who wanders from one man to another with her troubled daughter in tow, eventually ending up in Alaska among some questionable denizens. The first hour is spent establishing the setting and characters, whereas the last hour focuses more on the challenges facing the man, woman, and teenage girl as they becoming unwittingly caught up in a situation that could get them all killed.
Beautiful scenery and great songs help to develop the film.
Sayles has the courage not to spell out the ending or to feed us formula as so many other filmmakers would have. That makes this film a good choice for those who are tired of the same-old same-old.
Movie Review: Great Movie, Great Score! Summary: 5 Stars
I had very little expectations for this DVD, I just rented it because it seemed mildly interesting in the package. I was completely consumed by the story, performances, musical score, and even the vocal offerings of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. She has a beautiful voice with a raw, unpolished quality that hits you right in the heart. As for the ending, listen to the commentary by John Sayles(a feature available on the DVD)and you'll realize it ended the only way it could. Anything else would have been a cheap commercialization of a story that meant so much more. If this flick leaves you disappointed, you didn't get it! By the way, I just ordered my own DVD, and the soundtrack CD.
Movie Review: Another masterpiece of Sayles Summary: 5 Stars
The first movie of Sayles I saw was "Lone Star" and it just fascinated me. The story, it's characters, the whole movie touched me deeply. "Limbo" is another great masterpiece, even though it does not match the quality of "Lone Star". There have been quite many negative opinions published about this movie among the reviewers... Its certainly true that this movie, the way it is done, and the story, are quite unconventional and might not appeal to everyone (especially the ambigous ending)... Still, I do think that you all should have a look at it before you judge ... Sayles and the fantastic actors deserve it.
