Movie Reviews of Lilo & Stitch

Movie Review: A great message, but a ho-hum movie
Summary: 3 Stars

Lilo and Stitch is, in my opinion, a below-average animated Disney offering. Don't get me wrong, the message is great - the importance of family, and of friendship, but, let's face it, the movie itself is quite forgettable when compared to other animated Disney offerings, e.g., Mulan, Hercules, Aladdin, etc., not to mention the recent parade of Pixar-Disney films.

The characters in Lilo and Stitch are likable, but they are not particularly memorable. I must admit though, that I DO like the fact that Disney opted to depart from their anatomically impossible princess female character forms and went with a human character that actually looks human. I also appreciate that this film deals with family-related issues that are real-life, rather than the complete escapism that is the center of many other Disney films. With that said, though, this is still a somewhat forgettable film.

Why do I think that?

1) Though the characters are likeable, they are not particularly memorable (even though they surf - a plus!)
2) The original music lacks pizzaz, and the only remotely memorable music from the score are the tracks they pull from Elvis.
3) It felt like Disney tried to interlace too many storylines together to make this film. I think that if Disney had focused on the two sisters and their plight and left Stitch out of this film they could have accomplished something memorable.
4) The CIA agent coming out at the end was sort of like introducing a new character, and a major one, on the last page of a murder-mystery, and didn't have it's desired effect.
5) The series of bumbling aliens, though providing some comic relief, didn't accomplish the kind of tension they could have.

All in all, as I mentioned before, I didn't find this film to be above even average.

3 stars - you'll be glad you watched it, but may regret paying to own it.

I recommend that you head to the video store...

Summary of Lilo & Stitch

"As Elvis might put it, you can't help falling in love with LILO & STITCH." -- Claudia Puig, USA TODAY. Out-of-this-world storytelling, stunning Disney animation, and wild and irresistible characters are at the heart of Disney's hilarious new animated adventure. This worldwide box office sensation is a heartwarming comedy about the power of loyalty, friendship, and finding your place in the world. On the lush and tropical Hawaiian Islands, an independent little girl named Lilo adopts what she thinks is an innocent puppy, completely unaware that he is a mischievous creature who has escaped from a faraway planet. Stitch takes Hawaii by storm, wreaking havoc and hanging ten while he evades the alien bounty hunters who are bent on recapturing him. It's an action-packed comedy the whole family will enjoy over and over again.
Warm, funny, and imaginative, Lilo & Stitch is the best animated feature the Walt Disney Studios have produced in years. On the planet Turo, mad scientist Jumba Jookiba (voice by David Ogden Stiers) has created a miniature monster programmed for destruction. When the monster escapes to Earth, it's adopted as a pet and named "Stitch" by Lilo (Daveigh Chase), a lonely little Hawaiian girl. Lilo and her older sister Nani (Tia Carrere) have been struggling to stay together since their parents died. Stitch and Lilo share some hilarious adventures, evading welfare officer Cobra Bubbles (Ving Rhames) and galactic police agents. They learn the timely lesson that a family can be something you're born into--or something you assemble. A warmth and sincerity that recall The Iron Giant and the films of Hiyao Miyazaki make Lilo a delightful fantasy adults and children can truly enjoy together. --Charles Solomon
