Movie Review: Hang onto your VHS copy, for now...

The two different specials on this DVD shows deserve 5 stars but the DVD treatment itself by Warner Brothers deserves 2 stars in my humble opinion. Sadly, sometimes it is better to wait until the DVD is released before you review it, this is certainly the case here. While the public has strongly supported the many multiple releases of remastered Rankin/Bass classics, needing at times a score sheet to keep up with which specials are in which box set, as each year they change the mix of titles, this release is hurtful to the fans for its lack of quality. It does not appear remastered and seems to be run off an old copy. Worse yet, it is a DVD-R "made on demand copy", instead of a professional printing on DVD. For many DVD machines that are a bit picky, this means they will not play right at home, freezing up. No extras like the other discs, but all this may be chalked up as the results of a feud between Rankin/Bass & Warner Bros, with accusations of Warner Brothers having shorted the animation company of its royalties.
There is a better copy of the Nestor story on another box set, "Classic Christmas Favorites", also sold at Amazon.com ASIN: B001H9N1AO
The two stories are both good, the first has more of an Anime feel to the story, it was made towards the end of the Rankin/Bass companies period, but it is based on a turn of the century book by L. Frank Baum. There is a group of gods who send Claus to earth to spread happiness. He makes sure that all children should receive gifts at Christmas. In the Nestor story, a Donkey that has ears that are so long they tumble to the ground is abused by his owner and is finally thrown into a winter storm to die. A cherub/angel brings Nestor to help a man and woman traveling to Bethlehem.
