My Husband loves this movie! Funny, good ending and not too many curse words!

Movie Review: WHAT A HOOT!
Summary: 4 Stars

I had owned a pan&scan laserdisc of this movie for years. I screened it for friends, always completely confident in the knowledge that it hadn't been seen: Everyone I've ever shown it to loved it! And now here it is in its original widescreen presentation, which looks fabulous.

Dreyfuss has never been better, Robbie Coltrane is an absolute hoot, David Johansen is gloriously over-the-top, and Allen Garfield, Jennifer Tilly, Teri Garr, Michelle Phillips, Cynthia Nixon (and many recognizable others) round out one of the greatest casts of lovable losers ever.

This movie is worth the price alone for the scene where Tilly delivers one of the most memorable film lines of the 80's: In excusing herself from the table in the Jockey Club, she begins to walk away from the table in that terrific, skin-tight-leave-nothing-to-the-imagination red dress. Dreyfuss's Trotter remarks admiringly to Garfield "nice legs", to which she whips around and delivers a career-making line if there ever was one: "yeeeaaahhhh, they go all the way from the floor to my ass", leaving the two men totally transfixed and speechless, and us, the viewers, in absolute hysterics. Marilyn Monroe never nailed a moment better!

This is a great movie that has charm, comedy and wonderful performances, and you'll be wondering why it never made it at the box office.

Movie Review: One of the funnier movies I've seen
Summary: 4 Stars

Did this ever get released to the theaters? Was there ANY money invested in marketing this? How is it that I discovered this on HBO in the early '90's and consider it one of the more amusing movies I've seen? I don't get it. There are so many endearing characters and amusing scenes that this movie is one to be viewed whenever you need a little grin, or if you are about to play the ponies yourself.

If there is a criticism of this movie, it's that the love angle between Garr and Dreyfus never really comes alive. This is in contrast to every other relationship in the movie- everyone plays their parts to the hilt, and the movie just "sings".

In some ways I am glad almost nobody has seen this; when I recommend it, I know I am going to get a favorable report.

Warning: If you have a bad habit of over-quoting movies (as I do!)... beware. Plenty of good material in this one!

Movie Review: A True Classic - But some of jokes may be to inside for some.
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a firefighter and this one is a classic in our station house. It holds a place on a list that includes Caddy Shack and Animal House.

However, having said that I admit to knowing other people who have seen the movie and don't get it. Maybe the key is you need at least a passing acquaintance with gamblers and the gambling mentality. A little knowledge of race track lovers in particular will probably also increase your appreciation.

Dreyfuss' perfect day is the fantasy ride of every gambler, even the most social of gamblers among us, and it is complimented by the oddball assortment of characters and race track regulars (i.e. gamblers) around him. It is hilarious for us because most of us recognized or identified with these characters and maybe that is more important with this comedy than with some others.
