Movie Reviews of Let It RideMovie Review: A Great 'Little' Film Summary: 5 Stars
Little, in the sense that it wasn't highly promoted upon its release and great in the sense that it is difficult to think of another film that was this well acted and cast. There's not a performance in this movie that doesn't ring true. We either know, or know of, these people. From the owners/trainers in the paddocks to the bettors in the stands, every one of these folks looked like they were right where they belonged.Richard Dreyfuss, as Jay Trotter, plays a down on his luck taxi driver who just can't avoid the track. But today, he has a sure thing (along with a $50 bill in his shoe)... for one race on the card. How he works his way from the bar, to the rail, to the stalls, to The Jockey Club and then back to the rail is likely to be some of the most pleasing 87 minutes you're ever likely to spend looking at a television screen. And Dreyfuss is terrific. How can Teri Garr not love this guy? He drives her nuts, but she can't help but care for him. And so will you. Rent it, buy it, look for it on a pay channel... but see it. Personally, I can't NOT watch this movie when it comes on TV. And I've seen it a dozen times. Chances are that you will, too.
Movie Review: Let It Ride is a sure bet Summary: 5 Stars
I can't add a thing to all the other reviews of "Let It Ride" than to affirm, they are right! This is truly a wonderful, hilarious, heart-warming movie. Every scene and every character in it works. Proof that marketing can make or break a movie, this sleeper should have been a smash hit instead of a largely unknown gem. Richard Dreyfus plays the lead character, Trotter, who in the opening scene is in a restaurant with his wife, played by Terri Garr, happily sharing resolutions including his abstaining from any more gambling. Then his unintentional overhearing of a conversation taped in the back seat of his buddy Looney's cab (played by David Johanssen) triggers his unbelievably lucky day at the horse races. It is there that the movie really comes alive as we tour the racetrack and meet the well-cast loveable losers that populate it. All the characters ring true to life even though played in a light-hearted comic manner. Each has his own unique personality and you enjoy every one of them. It is a feel-good movie where the loser finally gets his break in life and you find yourself cheering for him all the way.
Movie Review: God likes me, he really really likes me!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is my Happy Movie. When the week has really gotten to me, and I'm ready to run screaming into traffic, I watch this movie and laugh my butt off.
The story is about a down and out gambler whose marriage is on the rocks. He gets a hot tip on a horse, and goes to the track for one last bet. What follows is an improbable series of lucky events that restore his faith in man, his love of life, and his relationship with his wife.
The cast is mainly character actors, that you immediately recognize, but can't name. His asides to us in the audience, include us in on his winning streak.
Is this movie for you? The punch lines are obvious, the ending is predictable, and the story is shallow. However; I can't explain exactly why, but at the end of this movie I can't help feeling like tomorrow will be a better day. If you liked "what about Marry and "Van Wilder", then you may want to pass this movie by. If you liked "Joe Versus the Volcano" or "One Fine Day" then you MAY like this movie. I highly recommend this movie, but warn you that it has limited appeal.
Movie Review: Hysterical Sleeper Comedy Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is hysterical! It is a totally undiscovered sleeper comedy which makes owning it even more enjoyable. The acting is brilliant. Richard Dreyfus plays the main character, Trotter, like second skin. His nuances of the character's personality are unreal. You can almost see yourself doing exactly what Trotter does if you were him, Dreyfus' acting is that sharp. The rest of the cast is great too - and mostly unknowns.
You will start to feel the emotions and get lost in this film even if you're not watching it on a big screen. It is just such a fun, happy, laugh out loud movie. It's got a Hollywood-perfect ending, but it doesn't spoil the movie at all. Perfect for a "I-need-a-laugh-today" moment.
The other reviewers have described the plot so I'll leave it at that. Just to share the impact this great comedy has on me, quotes from this film resurface in my mind from time to time.
It's worth owning. You will watch it over and over and smile everytime you see the DVD case on your media shelf.
Movie Review: When a Loser can't stop Winning Summary: 5 Stars
I'd heard there were problems with the making of this comedy and it slipped in and out of theatres without much notice. I remember seeing the trailer and thinking that the movie looked terrible. Then I saw it was based on a Jay Cronley novel. If you've never read a Jay Cronley novel, find one: he has a hilarious writing style that can't be transferred to a movie screen. He wrote FUNNY FARM (made into the Chevy Chase movie) and QUICK CHANGE (with Bill Murray). The perfect John Candy role can be found in WALKING PAPERS but, sadly, John's gone. And then there's GOOD VIBES, which became LET IT RIDE. This is a funny, funny movie. It takes the seedy setting of a horse track and fills it with hilarious characters all trying to make that winning bet. Richard Dreyfus gives an energetic performance as Jay Trotter, a loser who, for one day, just can't stop winning. Give this underrated gem a shot. If you connect with it, then it's a winning bet.
