Movie Reviews of Les MiserablesMovie Review: Exceptional adaptation Summary: 5 Stars
From the first time I watched this movie (about 1999) I was blown away by its powerful tale of redemption. I am glad that that this was the medium that introduced me to the story of Jean Valjean, Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush brought their characters to life for me. You feel for Valjean as he spends the rest of his life trying to become a better man, despite all the barriers that are thrown in front of him. Geoffreys' portrayal of Javert brought about a mix of emotions from me, I truly hated and loathed the man, I wracked my brain to try and understand what would make someone so bitter, so ruthless, so utterly devoid of compansion - and in the end I even pitied him. Excellent acting.
The story is timeless and a classic, and this movie is an excellent adaptation. For a truly monumental experience go read the book after you've seen this movie, Victor Hugo is a genius.
Movie Review: Excellent movie! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is a wonderful depiction of grace and redemption. From the very start where Jean Valjean stole silver from the bishop and when he was returned by the police the bishop said it was a gift and asked why he didn't take the candlesticks as they were worth more. And then the bishop told him that he ransomed Valjean from evil and bought his soul which he now is giving to God. From that time forward, we see the life of Valjean is transformed and how it affects the lives of the people around him to the very memorable end where the policeman who has hunted Valjean for 20 years has to make a decision what to do with him. I was very impressed by the movie. I thought it was well done and well worth the time to watch. And the undertone message of grace, forgiveness, mercy, and compassion are very tastefully acted out and enjoyable to watch.
Movie Review: Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
This Movie could not have been more perfect. It was not too long, not too short. I'm sorry but some movies like the ones mentioned by the reviewer in the top 500 reviewers catagory, were the most boring and energy depleting films in the history of motion pictures. The only kind of person who sits through those movies does not have a social life. This movie has everything in it and it does not take forever and ever and ever and ever to tell the most simple yet endearing and heartfelt story. Its got all the major hollywood elements without going to the extreme. Its got sex, violonce, rebellion, hatred, love, passion, twists, turns, suspense, drama, mercy, and most importantly it depicts an act of history in one of the most pleasurable ways, In the form of a movie. And for all you students out there, enjoy not reading the book.
Movie Review: Imprisonment vs the freedom of true humility Summary: 5 Stars
This sociologically/psychologically complex movie not only explores the human's choice of miserable imprisonment in the ways, means and dictates of the world (Geoffrey Rush, the policeman) vs the ultimate freedom and joy of true humility (Jean Valjean) - the viewer is also left with adoration for the Christ-like Valjean to the point of wanting to be like him. The viewer is revealed a new perception of God and a new response to all of life through much of the story, but in particular through one key scene: When Valjean is abused (spat upon and cursed) by Fantine, his response is simply, "She was upset. I forgive her." That we, like God, could all be this forgiving of very person, every offense, every time. After seeing Les Miserables, the viewer will want to try.
Movie Review: Breathtaking and glorious... a true classic. Summary: 5 Stars
Amybe not so popular among younger people, which is why it slipped through the cracks and was soon forgotten, but this film is an absolute wonder by all means. Delivering powerful performances by a talented cast, and beautious scenery, this film depicts the life of a convict who is transformed by a single act of kindness, with a detective on his tail for over twenty years. Not exactly like the book, but that doesn't make it worse. It's a winner, and if you're a fan of the movies Elizabeth and Braveheart, then rent this one tonight! The DVD release is wonderfully mastered, with a widescreen format to truly enjoy the intended images, two Dolby soundtracks that give high-guality sound, and a theatrical trailer. Give this one a chance; you won't be sorry.
