Movie Reviews of Leonard Cohen I'm Your ManMovie Review: Better Every Time I Watch It Summary: 5 Stars
Anyone who wants to reflect on life--its challenges, joys and spiritual context--and enjoy well-produced live music performances at the same time should have this DVD. I've watched it several times and now put it on in the background like any good CD for both the music and commentary. Cohen's stories about his life, his resulting zen-like insights, and the weaving in and out of entire songs make this DVD continually pleasing just for the sake of listening. Cohen tells about his life experience in the rich, personal language of a true poet--universal but not dogmatic, spiritual but not self-righteous, deeply felt but not overly sentimental. The performers are mostly independent singer/songwriters (some from Canada and Great Britain) with rich voices singing a selection of Cohen's most well-known songs.
Movie Review: In Awe Of The Master Summary: 5 Stars
Leonard Cohen is a master and this documentary is a fitting tribute to a legend. The audience at the Film Forum in New York sat in awed silence while the music washed though us and the lyrics cleansed our souls. Sometimes, the words cut painfully close to the bone, reminding us of our shared experience of being human.
Leonard Cohen goes to places most of us are unwilling to look at and brings back truth that no one can deny. Bono accurately describes it as going into the abyss and laughing at it. The artists performing his songs follow him there and brilliantly express the depth of his poetry set to music.
This is an outstanding film, documenting the poetic voice of our generation, and surely of many generations to come.
Movie Review: Two days later and I'm still reeling Summary: 5 Stars
Saw this film two days ago and I'm still emotionally drained.
I'd been expecting a simple concert film with Leonard Cohen performing old and new songs. That's not what I got. What I got was completely unexpected and I'm grateful for it.
This is a concert film, but the performers are others performing Cohen songs. Some of the people I'd heard of, but had never heard perform. I'll be purchasing cd's by all of them.
Leonard Cohen does perform one song at the end of the film; the entire film is a build-up to this performance. When the film ended, the entire audience sat in awed silence - we didn't want it to end.
I'll buy this dvd as soon as it's out - meanwhile I'll be listening to Antony albums.
Movie Review: His Life in Art Summary: 5 Stars
Like many other truly great works, this was a film waiting to be made, for the right hands to come along and bring it into existence. With dazzling artistry, Lian Lunson has interspersed footage of some of Cohen's most talented admirers from the world of music singing his songs with interview segments with the man himself. Lunson has also included scenes with Joshu Sasaki Roshi, Leonard Cohen's Zen teacher of some 40 years, as well as luminaries such as Bono discussing the poet/singer/songwriter and his work. This is a film of rare beauty and depth, a must see and must have, whether you are well acquainted with this artist or interested in finding out more about just who he is and what it is he does.
Movie Review: Amazing Peek Into Leonard Cohen's Life Summary: 5 Stars
I've watched this DVD about 5 times since I got it. I love, love, love Nick Cave singing Leonard Cohen's songs and telling how he came to Mr. Cohen's music and writings. Bono's talk about how Mr. Cohen has affected his life and music was also touching and inspiring. All of the music performances were amazing, particularly Rufus Wainwright's performance of "Hallelujah". If you love Leonard Cohen and his music, this is a must-have. I particularly enjoyed Mr. Cohen's background tale of his song, "At the Chelsea Hotel 2". I never knew about his affair with Janis Joplin. That's just one of the small slices of his life that he talks about. This DVD needs at least 10 stars!
