Movie Reviews of Legend (Ultimate Edition)

Movie Review: The Director's Cut disc is a real improvement
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw "Legend," during my first spring in NYC in 1986. Coincidentally, at the same time, I was working as a production assistant on another film, "Angel Heart," written by the same author William Hjortsberg.

Despite the phenomenal production design and trademark Ridley Scott visuals, the film always left me a little cold. The Tangerine Dream score seemed a tad out of place for a fantasy film such as this.

The Director's Cut is a much more satisfying experience. It offers the chance to finally hear the Jerry (Star Trek the Movie) Goldmith's original music, which seems better suited to the film. The scene when Lilly first encounters the unicorn, now feels a bit more like Eve in the Garden of Eden instead of a spoiled girl misbehaving and causing a movie's worth of trouble. In short, motivations in several scenes seem clearer. Tom Cruise's "Jack of the Green" character feels largely the same. In addition, the restoration and transfer is phenomenal. The layered clear packaging is also very clever and a welcome change from the black boxes and universally hated snapper cases. No wonder Ridley Scott signed his name on the case :)

Movie Review: Movie critics hated this film. I almost feel sad for them
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me just start by saying that Legend the ultimate edition has both Director's cut, and the American release. Although the Director's cut is interesting, I will always remain a huge fan of the American version, w/ the Tangerine Dream score. The American release has a better ending, and just seems more magical. Legend is Ridley Scott's crowning achievement. No other fantasy movie comes remotely close to this film. Sure, I liked the Lord of the Rings films, but I can honestly say that Computer generated creatures, and effects have ruined modern film. No matter how real it looks on screen, I can always tell when something is CGI, and where it is supposed to create an immersive experience, it distracts, and ruins the feel of a live action movie. I can't believe that almost every film critic thought Legend was a bad movie. Either They are all robots with no sense of imagination, or They just hate to be taken on a journey of the Fantasy realm. Maybe I'm Bias, after all I grew up playing Dungeons and Dragons, and loving every minute of it. All I know, is if you are a true Fantasy fan, and like Dungeons, Unicorns, Goblins, Elves etc. This is the movie for you.

Movie Review: Enchanting
Summary: 5 Stars

I have always loved this movie since I first saw it in the 80's. This DVD is great, although I wish it had more on Tom Cruise in the interviews. The theatrical release continues to be my favorite. I can't get through the Director's Cut without laughing every other scene. First of all, Lily's singing gets irritating...and the melody isn't even attractive. Then there's Jack, who has even cheesi-er parts that I'm GLAD they removed from the theatrical release (ex. jumping and flipping in the air, watching him eat a cookie..etc). The music is *The Sound Of Music* style...and i prefer the enchanting fairy-like sound of Tangerine Dream's music on the theatrical release. It seems to fit more. Princess Lily seems more of a spoiled little girl in the Director's Cut. Jack begs her not to touch the unicorns, but she turns and looks at him as though to say "Just try and stop me"....which angers me. Darkness was very well done by Tim...and the fairies and other little creatures are fun to watch. I just prefer the Theatrical Release. I believe it's a better experience and doesn't drag out so much. Buy the DVD for the sharp picture and extra features.

Movie Review: No to the American Version, Yes to International
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutley loved this film when it was first released here in america. But I never knew that it was cut and torn apart so badly for the north american audience. Although confused by the american version's story, I stilled loved the movie for its possiblites and its visuals. But after I watched the international version on this DVD set, I have come to the conclusion this is one of the best classics of all time, in its original form. Anyone who disagree's obviously has no taste for fairy tales. And has no open imagination. Ridley Scott should have never ever touched this movie and tore it apart as badly as he did for the american market. Its sad that it was done that way, the american audience missed one of the greatest fairy tales to come to film. If you havent seen it, then watch the international version, and never watch the american version.
And also to add, the acting is absolutley fantastic. Especially Tim Curry. Kudos to him.
As for visuals, stunning, and one of the best devils or satan to come to film. Costumes are fantastic, sets are incredible. Truly a classic.
As for the story, a great fairy tale of good and evil. Very well written.

Movie Review: Fantastic and finally the way it should be
Summary: 5 Stars

Legend turns out to be the best it has ever been with Ridley Scott's true version of his dream masterpiece. For years there has been a soundtrack out with the original music written by Jerry Goldsmith and to finally see the "black dress" scene with what was originaly intended makes the movie a true "Grimm" tale.

The making of on disc two tells you alot of info on the trials it took to make the movie with most of the cast. (Why Tom Cruise wouldn't talk about this film is beyond me.) Movie buffs will be amazed to see the old 007 soundstage where the movie was filmed and was the last to be shot there.

For anyone who hasn't see the movie, take the time to watch both versions. Tim Curry's performance is worth both versions and he just plays it so over the top that he IS the ultimate "devil" and evil being. For Star Trek fans, Robert Picardo (The Doctor from ST: Voyager) plays the witch "Meg" and shows how you can play a charater through all that rubber.

Here is also an example of how great visiuals could be attained before the digital age of special effects. The documentary on the making of is one of the best that has been produced by Universal.
