Movie Reviews of Legend (Ultimate Edition)Movie Review: This DVD has everything! Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD comes with the theatrical version of "Legend" and a second DVD that contains the director's cut. The greatest thing about the theatrical version is the clarity and the Tangerine Dream score. The theatrical version is much shorter and sort of confusing since some scenes were deleted. Before the movie begins there is also a screen scroll which explains, pretty much, the moral of the film, which is kind of upsetting. I don't think moviewatchers are so dimwitted that they cannot understand the age-old story and moral. Good is constantly juxtaposed against evil, but the horrific realization that the heroes come to is that good cannot exist without evil. I think most people can understand that without a screen scroll.I suggest watching the director's cut version first. It makes a lot more sense and it contains the original soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith. This soundtrack cannot be compared to the Tangerine Dream soundtrack since they are both so different in style. The Goldsmith soundtrack is more dramatic and thus makes the movie seem more like a drama. The Tangerine Dream soundtrack, with its electronic instruments, makes the film seem more like a fantasy. They are both good in their own right. The casing looks really neat too, and this 2-disc DVD can be bought at a great price.
Movie Review: The Directors cut...how it should've been in the first place Summary: 5 Stars
As stated in other reviews, this movie has been highly under-rated. Just seeing the American release, though, it's easy to see why. While the Tangerine Dreams score was all well and good, it didn't take the movie seriously. The score made an otherwise dark and gritty fantasy movie into a light hearted fairy tale. The dialogue was choppy and often cliche. Characters were one sided and often boring. Now here comes the Directors cut. The score makes this dark and gritty movie truely epic. The dialogue has been restored so you know what the characters are talking about, and characterization has been fleshed out. This is how the movie should have been released in the first place. Having both versions of the movie in one set for such a low price is really a treat (there are still some things in the American version that make it worth the watch). Being the type to always look to see what extras are included, I must say I'm really satisfied with what's included here (see edition details above). With the recent release of the Lord of the Rings movies, I believe that America is finally catching on to the dark side of fantasy. Not every fantasy movie is a nice fairy tale with a pink little bow on top. This movie exemplifies the dark, epic fantasy adventure. Definitely worth the price!
Movie Review: Still like the original best! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, I just watched both versions (the expanded Director's Cut with the Jerry Goldsmith score and the original theatrical release with the Tangerine Dream score)and even flipped back and forth and watched specific scenes like the ending more than once. My verdict is that the U.S. theatrical version with the Tangerine Dream score is still vastly superior. That music was just so haunting and so otherwordly while the Goldsmith score, while pretty, was much more traditional. I did enjoy more dialogue to explain what was going on (the U.S. theatrical version was notoriously short on that), but in some places it really bogged down the story and explained things that were better left to the viewer's imagination. It made the draggy scenes (which usually involved the fairies or the trolls) even draggier. And the ending is worlds better in the Tangerine Dream version. Anyway, I've always loved this movie so I'm giving it five stars. I know the plot, acting, and dialogue are hardly stellar, but I'm willing to overlook that because the visual sumptuousness is unsurpassed as is the primal appeal of its images. Definitely a fairy tale for the ages! I'm so thrilled to have both versions on DVD. Unlike so many DVD's, it truly lives up to its billing as the ULTIMATE edition!
Movie Review: Legend Redeemed at Last Summary: 5 Stars
I admit when I first watched the movie Legend on TV I was addicted. I was probably one of the minority that thought Ridley Scott did damn well with this fairy tale motion picture. But when I found out that it wasnt the version that he originally intended for the US audiences I began wondering why? The performances by Tom Cruise and, in my eyes the ultimate villain actor, Tim Curry(of Rocky Horror fame)as well as newcomer Mia Sara, were tremendous. I did feel skeptical as to the score performed by Tangerine Dream. Why put a rock type score in a fairy tale or fantasy movie? I then researched who originally did the score and was stunned to find out that it was Jerry Goldsmith who was the original composer. Unfortunately at that time the only release that was the US theatrical version. I was ticked off! But now I found that Ridley Scott released the Legend Ultimate Edition DVD. I only had one word, SWEET! Two versions of the movie, the original Jerry Goldsmith extended movie, and the US Tangerine Dream Theatrical version. Now we, the viewers can view the movie the way director Ridley Scott intended it to be. This truly is a cult classic to be treasured. I just feel it is a shame that Legend wasnt recieved as well as it should have. But I'll let you folks decide.
Movie Review: Legend (Ultimate Edition) Summary: 5 Stars
Definitely one of the greatest fantasy movies of all time. It is a classic tale of good versus evil filled with goblins, fairies, elves, unicorns and mortals. A young Tom Cruise plays Jack, a forest-dwelling hero in love with the lovely princess Lily (Mia Sara). In an attempt to win his true love's heart, he introduces Lily to the unicorns warning her that she must not touch them, which of course she does (breaking off the unicorn's horn and plunging the world into utterly cold despair). She is then kidnapped by an evil goblin who takes her to his master (the devil himself), As in all good fairytales the hero must rescue the beautiful damsel in distress, in this case to save the world from eternal darkness.
It is Tim Curry's portrayal of the Lord of Darkness that stands out as exceptionally fine. With incredible costumes and makeup and delightful set designs this movie is delightful for all but the very young (some scenes may be too scary).
Be sure to watch the bonus disc which features lost scenes, a photo gallery, a music video by Brian Ferry "Is Your Love Strong Enough?", and commentary by director Ridley Scott. Be sure to listen to the fabulous soundtrack of this delightful movie.
