Movie Reviews of Lee Ritenour - OvertimeMovie Review: Ultimate Musicianship as usual!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Lee Ritenour and his stable of monster musicians have created one of the best musical atmospheres I've ever enjoyed on this concert DVD! If you're a fan of "smooth jazz", you are in for a treat with this one. On this DVD, Lee and company share many years of creativity. We are treated to some of his greatest work. And the musicians... Anthony Jackson and Melvin Lee Davis on the bass, Patrice Rushen and Dave Grusin on piano, Harvey Mason and Oscar Seaton on the drums - man, it just doesn't get any better. Something the "ad" fails to mention is the many "mini interviews" conducted with the players. These were simply fantastic. From a guitarists point of view, you can see the vast array of equipment Lee uses as well. It's interesting to me how his backline of gear is probably worth nearly as much as both of my vehicles... If not more! Buy this DVD, you'll be glad you did!
Movie Review: Rit's Best Summary: 5 Stars
Anyone who plays guitar or follows the music business is probably familiar with the technique and diversity of this prolific and exceptionally gifted musician, arranger and producer. Lee Ritenour's "Overtime", the long awaited DVD spans his career and
covers the best of the best. The sound quality and dolby digital 5.1 surround sound really make you feel like you are there watching and feeling the interaction of the musicians. Long familiar with eachother, the musicians play so well together it takes on an almost telepathic connectedness. The cheerful Ritenour, spins fresh and exuberant versions from his vast arsenal of music across different genres: acoustic, jazz, funk etc., and his fretwork seems to just be getting better, if that is even imaginable. Some musicians love playing music for its own sake and Ritenour is certaintly one of those people. Thanks, Lee!
Movie Review: This DVD Worth Every Penny of It! Summary: 5 Stars
Two-set DVD is Lee's latest production with other great jazz musicians. First one gradually gets you in the mood with introduction of some of the key collaborator along with Lee's early masterpieces. Second DVD really takes you to the elixir of Lee's ultimate greatest hits. Once you are done with 2 DVD's, you will be totally carried away by all the live performance and atmosphere within. Great sound quality, lighting, video editting and most importantly - Lee's smooth performance. I have been listening to Lee's work since early 90's, I never gets bored. His unique style is bar none, not to mention with all other great musicians in this gig. This one is a must buy, highly recommended!
Movie Review: Overlooked fusion artists Summary: 5 Stars
True, M. Grusin is not the most extraverted pianist out there, and the in-between spoken parts of the show can be irritating after a while, but M. Ritenour have this ability to bring these talented but somehow austere musicians together to play in a fully enjoyable manner.
My guess is that people tend to despise him because he used extensively electronic keyboards for some of his solo albums but Miles did it too, near the end of his musical career.
I bet you will press the repeat key more than once after having heard the amazing cover of "Papa was a Rolling Stone" !
Movie Review: This Band Smokes! Summary: 5 Stars
Yeah! Lee has really come across full strength with this DVD. The sound is excellent, crisp and clear with a nice 5.1 sound mix. He has some of the best musicians on the planet playing at these gigs. Harvey Mason is mind-blowing on the drums and with Anthony Jackson's pumping bass and Alex Acuna's percussion it is one of the stongest and tightest rhythm sections I have ever heard. The vocalists were also amazing. Loved hearing them do Captain Fingers - Absolutely incredible! Lee's guitar playing really burns it up. This is essential music for anyone who truly loves great music.
