Movie Review: Benchmark dvd!

Very good DVD from Rit! Very very nice! I love it! I bought this one in a boring afternoon, for few bucks, because it was on sale with a special promotional price. I was not particularly thrilled by the purchase because I know Rit since I was a kid and I have tons of his stuff, but to say the truth in the recent 15 years I concentrated more on serious Jazz. So I purchased this one just to have something new to look at, but with no particular emotional bond to it. So if you are in that skeptical mood, I completely understand you. If you are thinking "yawn, ok, it's Rit, that elevator stuff... boring" I'm with you. But I have to say this dvd is really beautiful and deserves the attention of the music fans. I'm coming back to it again and again. First of all it's a top notch product. The production is splendid, the video shootings and the audio are fabulous. A benchmark dvd. No excuses. Fantastic stuff. The second strong point is the setting. A very beautiful small studio, with persian carpets on the floor (!!!), packed with instruments and wonderful music gear, a perfect situation for serious players, the right place to find the concentration, to free the expression, it's intimate, the focus is on the music and the interplay (the musicians are very close to each other) it is something that every musician would go nuts for (I'm one of them!). This is the perfect setting to me, perfect. A dream come true for guitarists, you can see clearly all the Rit gear, vintage Fenders, Mesas, his 49 L5, the 335, everything he is associated with (except for his beautiful signature small L5 designed by Mike McGuire of Valley Arts fame, don't understand why onestly ... ). Wonderful! The third strong point is the music itself. Rit don't play the star role. Here the star is the music, the art of playing with a band and to find the perfect groove, the perfect atmosphere, when everybody is with the other musicians playing as a well rounded and inspired band and not as a bunch of professional players on their daily job. The song list is funny and entertaining. Lee plays well, he's not presenting something new, he is just playing his stuff, all the things he is, the soft jazz side, the Wes Montgomery influenced solos, the soft Cali funky rhythms, the brasilian tunes, everything. The cast is truly a music freaks dream come true. I particularly admire the piano player, an afro american girl with a nice, swinging, sophisticated touch that to me added the right amount of hipness to the band. Fantastic musician! In the end it's a dvd I'm sure I will play a lot of times in the future because it is light, but at the same time deep, it's inspiring and entertaining with a special atmosphere, and the music is brilliant. Overall a splendid product.
