Movie Reviews of Last Orders

Movie Review: What a great story
Summary: 5 Stars

What more can I say, this film was thoroughly enjoyable. All the character portrayals are incredibly real. A great collection of actors doing what they do best.

There are no special effects here, just a fabulous heart-felt story.

Is it worth purchasing? Yes. Each time you watch it, you will laugh and you will cry.

Enjoy.

Movie Review: Order it first....
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie describes perfectly the life, the atmosphere in England. The characters are so real. Excellent acting by Bob Hoskins, Michael Caine and all the cast. I was particularly impressed by Helen Mirren's performance, comparable to her performance in Greenfingers.

Movie Review: Tender Moving Tale of Love, Betrayal and Regret
Summary: 4 Stars

Graham Swift's Booker-winning story of old pals meeting to say good-bye to an old friend has made a marvelous film. 'Last Orders' is a tale of love, betrayal, and regret of things not done. Jack Dodds has left a final request or a 'last order' that his ashes be scattered in the ocean at a near-by coast town of Margate.

Jack, played by Michael Caine is a bigger than life character. He and his wife, Amy, played by Helen Mirren had their honeymoon at Margate. Courtenay (fair undertaker Vic) and Hemmings (volatile ex-boxer Len) make a highly enjoyable pair of opposites. Ray played by Bob Hoskins, Vic the undertaker played by Tom Courtnay and Len, played by David Hemmings agree to support their friend and take his ashes home. Amy wants no part of it, but their son, Vince, played by Ray Winstone agrees. He owns a car dealership and takes his biggest car and off they go. They meet at their pub and in flashback form we learn how each of them are connected and what part they played in Jack's life. Jack has ended up in the hospital and with some sort of cancer is winding down his last days. Ray, played the ponies and won and lost most of his fortune, Jack asks him to bet his last thousand pounds on a good horse to pay off his butcher shoppe so Amy will have some money to support herself. Ray and Jack met during the war and have been friends since that time. Vic is a boyhood friend as is Len. Their relationships are open and varied and grudges are born and never settled. To top it all off, Jack and Amy have a child, June, a mentally challenged girl in a home, who is never mentioned or acknowledged by Jack. Amy visits her every Thursday and has done so for the past fifty years. Vince knows she exists but not much more than that. Vince and Jack do not see eye to eye. Jack wanted his son to follow in his footsteps as a butcher, but that is not what Vince wanted. He started his own garage and has become very successful. So off they go. They stop every so often to visit a pub, or a farm or a monument- something that has some meaning in Jack's life. They make their way to Margate admidst several adventures and set backs, but they finally arrive.

This film has some wonderful scenes and the characters are so well acted by this astounding cast. The film is a low budget one which is probably the reason why few of us have seen or heard of this film. Do yourself a favor and view it- there is a great deal to gain from this film- how we see each other and ourselves through the years.

Highly Recommended. prisrob 08-02-09
