Movie Review: Better than a "B" Movie

When I think about the typical 1950's to early 1960's B-movie, I think of stuff that was probably inane back then, and is still inane today. That's not to say that B-movies of the era are not fun to watch, it just that for the most part there's not much plot or story or characterization in most of those films.
This movie, however, is far different. From the outset, you are cast into a story with a plot and a real character. You are placed into a bleak world where you feel what it is like to be totally alone in the world. And after the first ten minute, you are aware that this is a good movie.
I'm not going to belabor the plot or the origins of the story, since others have already covered that ground. I will point out though that Vincent Price is excellent in this film. I've always had mixed opinions about Vincent Price because most of his films were campy, over-the-top typical B-movie performances. But in this film, Price hits a home run. You relate to him because he comes across as an everyman who is laboring through life alone, trying to make it through one more isolated day.
One other thing I'll point out is that this is an extremely dark film. Without giving away the ending, I'll just say you will be surprised.
This is a bleak, dark, and ultimately brillant work. It may suffer some around the edges because of the low budget the production had, but the core of the story is dynamite.
