Movie Reviews of Las Tres Perfectas CasadasMovie Review: A timeless classic, specially if you like Arturo de Cordova's acting Summary: 5 Stars
My favorite amongst Arturo de Cordova's films (together with 'El' from Luis Buñuel). The film obviously could be set in any year or period, which makes it really timeless. The story of 3 marriages, which is set on the 18th anniversary of the three. The couples always celebrate with a fourth man, a friend of the 3 men since childhood, which has been part of their lives always, being there for their relationships, marriages, et al. But when the man (Arturo de Cordova) fails to arrive on the night of the celebration, and hearing from his butler later that night that he has died on a plane accident on the way to them, the plot thickens. One of the men is his lawyer, which has instructions to open a letter he left, in case he died, and in the presence of the three men. Without giving too many plot points away, he does not die on the fated plane accident, arriving late and taking a later flight... from then on, the drama starts since the men have opened the letter as instructed, and found out about his relationships with their 3 wives...
The movie delivers such a dramatic pulse, thanks no less to the cynic, calculating and cold portrayal of Arturo de Cordova's tormented character, one who hides under a shadow of relentless womanizing, one shot affairs, and a despondent aura of despicable attitude towards what the other 3 men represent, which is the faithfulness of marriage, the sanctity of their unions, and the peace of having such perfect brides. Well, in the world of this movie, nothing is as it seems, and the last act is a tour-de-force by the main characters which brings an inevitable but shocking conclusion.
I have to admit, that the movie has a pedigree that I wasn't aware of, since the writer of the drama is a known expat from Spain, who relocated to Argentina in his prime, writing theater plays. One could easily see this movie as a theater play, with acting forever above the atmosphere. But make no mistake, this is a strong play, that I can imagine caused quite a stir when it was first premiered... tame by the standards of today, it can still wrench the throat and instill a fate of dread about the end. It's a fabulous piece and I'm sure will keep you tied to your seat until the end.
And then there were the faults. For me the movie it's worth 5 stars, but the DVD presentation is basic to the extreme. Save for the passable image quality (which one has to comprehend, given that probably there doesn't exist a pristine copy of the source material), there are no extras. For the language impaired, there's no english track, no subtitles in english or spanish, no history of the movie, its players, nothing. But this is offset by the fact that it is a hard to find title, and in Mexico I did not find on any label.
In the end, an affable release, with good quality picture throughout. If you love Arturo de Cordova's typical character acting, then you could do no wrong with this picture. It's a testament to the quality of his tormented acting style, which always brought awe and excitement to my eyes. Good movie, great premise, superb ending. Enjoy it!
