Movie Reviews of Lars and the Real Girl

Movie Review: Offbeat, funny & sweet
Summary: 5 Stars

Lars & the Real Girl is a love story, but not the kind of love story you start out expecting. Suffice it to say that everyone in this wintery northern town loves Lars, and Lars could use the support. He's having a bit of a crisis because his sister-in-law's pregnancy is bringing up some painful issues that he hasn't properly dealt with. How Lars chooses to deal with his crisis, however, is not only unorthodox, it will challenge the whole community's sensibilities. You see, Lars orders a life-sized doll on the Internet, and he seems to believe she's a real girl! Although you may wonder at first how a story about a man who orders a life-sized doll on the Internet could keep from descending into something vulgar, this comical heartwarmer keeps things surprisingly sweet. With a stellar cast, including Ryan Gosling and Patricia Clarkson, this movie is sure to make you smile and give you hope that people really can care enough to try to understand each other.

Movie Review: One of my favorite movies of all time.
Summary: 5 Stars

This beautiful, delicate, simple story of growth, the mystery of love, friendship, acceptance, amoung other things is spun into an amazing tale that will keep you interested from the first moment until the closing credits.

Lars lives in a small town in the guest house on his brother's property. He's a reclusive, sad sort of guy with no friends, no life, no love, until he meets Bionka... an adult sized realistic looking plastic doll. Not only does Bionka change Lars' life, but the life of the whole town. This story flows seamlessly, blossoms magnificently, being so well acted by Ryan Gosling. You can't help but fall in love with every character in this movie, covered in skin or plastic, and that's the moral at the end.

If you like quirky, charming, life stories about not everyday people then you'll love Lars and the Real Girl. Because, she is in fact real, in the hearts of everyone around her, and that makes her as real as anyone.

Movie Review: So implausible, so nice!
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't know much of mental illness, but the storyline truly felt completely implausible. So implausible that indeed it's hard to understand how the script, the direction and the acting could have made such a sweet and touching movie.

Acting, in particular, was just superb. I felt like watching real (ok, mostly too good to be real) people really dealing with the weirdest of situations. This is one of those rare movies where you empathize with the characters and you feel like jumping into the screen to talk to them and help them out.

With such an outlandish storyline, lesser directors would have made the n-th unnecessary stupid movie with sexual jokes and stereotyped characters. But Mr Gillespie has instead created one of the nicest feel-good movies I have seen in recent years. Congratulations to him, to Ms Oliver for such an excellent screen-writing and to the all the actors for a delightful movie! Highly highly recommended.

Movie Review: Amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

This is simply the most amazing film I've seen last year. Among all the wonderful things that happen in this movie, I love the idea of how the town joins in to help. Those people who decided to join the pretense in order to help Lars, soon found out that it wasn't hard at all, and little by little, they started to have fun themselves (designing a new haircut for Bianca, getting her new outfits). I frankly don't think this is far-fetched at all. No one is doing anything extraordinary, no super power required to do the pretense, it's all within our ability to be nice. I like to believe we are all capable of doing good things to help our neighbors and friends. In Lars and the real girl, the good-natured people join in to help and it plays off. I love this film. And the wonderful acting, Ryan Gosling is so good is a given. The supporting casts are phenomenal, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, and the adorable Kelli Garner. Great film.

Movie Review: Tough to describe.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the most difficult movies to try to explain to someone. The story is a very unique and fresh concept that had me both laughing and teary-eyed, sometimes at almost the same time. A young man who is emotionally shut off and unraveling suddenly clings to a 'love doll' he purchases online. 'Bianca' isn't a real girl, but she keeps him from having to face his real phobias as he makes up a personality, past, etc. for her, and truly believes in it. Since the doctor fears a breakdown if his friends and family don't 'play along', the entire town helps by pretending Lars' mannequin girlfriend is real, even the 'real girl' who has a crush on him. The story was even more hilarious when I found out the online site Lars ordered Bianca from is an actual love doll website! They really thought 'outside the box' on this one.
