Movie Reviews of Lars and the Real GirlMovie Review: The Sex doll that brings back "Lars" from Psychosis Summary: 5 Stars
I think that I can safely predict that "Lars and the Real Girl" will win the Award for the most original screenplay of 2007.Yes, I will go out on a limb, but Nancy Oliver, a well known writer of the hit series "Six Feet Under" has created something so new, fresh and unusual that critics will be forced to stand up and acknowledge just how clever this script really is.Who would have thought of taking a socially repressed young man and bringing him out of his severe and debilitating pychosis through the aid of a sex doll named Bianca, but someone from "Six Feet Under?" Every character that Nancy Oliver has created is so complete and individually unique that they engross you in a vortex of laughter and heartfelt goodness. An entire family and town is changed by emotionally deficient Lars played by a most gifted and exacting Ryan Gosling giving a performance that already is beyond "The Notebook" and "Half Nelson."Gosling gives life, breath and soul to Bianca, and in doing so finds the liberating answer to his own disease.I will say no more, because this film is one delightfully unfolding surprise after another. Finally, a truly unforgettable film!
Movie Review: Arguably the best film of 2007 Summary: 5 Stars
I remember seeing a preview for "Lars and the Real Girl" a number of weeks ago. I instantly thought that this was a movie I needed to see. I waited (somewhat impatiently) for the movie to go from "limited" release to "national" release. I saw it the first Saturday it was available at my local AMC Theater. The movie was everything that I thought it would be, and more. It had comedy; it had drama; it was emotionally moving; it made me laugh and, literally, made me cry. I was so touched by this inspiring film that I wanted to take my parents to see it the following weekend. Imagine my shock when I looked up movie times for the next Saturday and realized that all but one time -- a late night hour -- was available. The movie was barely in my local AMC theater for two full weeks, and that crushed me, because this movie deserves recognition and praise for the wonderful acting, script, and moving story.
Please, do not ignore this movie -- if it is still listed in your local movie theater, go and see it. If it is not, wait for a DVD release (as I am) and buy it. You will not be disappointed.

Movie Review: Interesting mix Summary: 5 Stars
When I first heard about this movie, I thought how ridiculous it probably was. But after it was nominated for several Academy Awards, I thought there was probably more to it than the previews indicated. And I was right, it is an incredible story. The first half is hilarious. The second half is unbelievably sad. The best comedy/drama I've ever seen. *Spoilers!* Lars buys a sex doll off the internet, and tells everyone she's his girlfriend. At first people are dumbfounded and flabbergasted. When the shock wears off, they make fun of him. What they don't realize is that Lars' neurosis makes him incapable of touching anyone, or being touched by anyone. Touch on his bare skin actually causes him physical pain. It is very touching to see how his small family and the entire town go from riduculing him to accepting his delusion and playing into it, for Lars' sake. The actors do a phenomenal job. The transition from ridiculing to accepting Lars' delusion is seamless and believable. Exceptionally well written and acted. Give it a try, and you won't be disappointed.
Movie Review: Emotionally packed Summary: 5 Stars
I have long hesitated to see this movie because its previews just seemed silly. Advertised as a comedy, I was not in rush to see a movie about a midwestern guy in love with a doll. But then I got the courage and I just LOVED this movie from start to finish. It is emotionally packed story about a young man who suddenly in the most unexpected way tries to resolve his deep emotional issues. There were moments in the film that were funny, but the story is really about one man's subconscious mind trying to heal itself after decades of suppression. What was very moving is that in this small town with very traditional people he finds the best support system ever to work out his issues. And the way that the story unravels is just one reason more for anyone to really see and enjoy this movie. The entire cast on this film was fantastic. But Ryan Gosling's performance of the main character Lars is mesmerizing. When is this actor going to get an Oscar? He is absolutely amazing. You must see this movie. It will leave a lasting effect on you.
Movie Review: Loved it. . . . Summary: 5 Stars
This is an incredibly heartfelt tale of the way a community comes together to help a young man work through some extremely difficult problems in life. Traumas from his childhood have given Lars a fear of intimacy that's so strong that he can't even be touched by other people without feeling pain. A delusional relationship helps him to find his way through his issues, but this film is more about the community that cares and shows him the love and acceptance he needs. Wow--what would life be like if all communities showed love and support rather than making fun of people and judging them harshly? That's a question to which this film gives us a hint of an answer, as we watch the whole community grow stronger as they help Lars deal with life. I kept waiting for the obligatory jerks who were going to mock him and do something awful to him or Bianca, but the filmmakers never sunk to that level to keep the narrative flowing. It's a bit painful to watch at times due to the severe pain we see in Lars, but well worth the time spent watching!
