Oh, and Lost in Space - The Complete First Season
Ahem, anyway, getting back to the matter at hand, I had vague memories of seeing this show during it's abortive run on UK television and I was always rather keen to see it again, so it was somewhat fortuitous that my significant other happened across this rather lavish boxed set - released to coincide with the release of the big-screen remake - and picked it up for me. And I got a rather natty tin lunchbox into the bargain, too. :)
The brain-child of Sid and Marty Krofft - who were also responsible for the splendidly trippy H.R. Pufnstuf - The Complete Series - this series follows the trials and travails of a family who find themselves marooned in a bizarre alternate dimension (in which past, present and future collide) after suffering a mishap involving a dinghy, an earthquake, a waterfall and a hole in space-time. Once there, they find themselves being menaced by curmudgeonly tyrannosaurs; obsteperous primates (known as Pakuni); evil, boggly-eyed, cross-bow wielding lizard creatures (known as Sleestak) and even a kindly, but far from bright, brontosaurus. Best of all, being that this series was made in the early to mid seventies, all of the above are rendered using glorious claymation, rubber suits and dodgy colour seperation overlay technology. If you can't deal with low production values then you should probably steer clear of this series. Its fair to say that the money lost during a cigarette break on the set of Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series would probably cover the entire production costs of a season of this. However, what this series has - in common with many of the early seasons of 'Doctor Who' - is a charm which transcends the studio-bound sets and polystyrene rocks. I defy all but the most cynical members of generation X to watch this and not feel a twinge of nostalgia for sunny seventies afternoons spent watching series like this and the Red Hand Gang after a day of playing outside.
I was rather surprised to see that many of the scripts for this show were penned by more than a few of the writers responsible for the original series of 'Star Trek'. Names like David Gerrold and DC Fontana will be familiar to fans of science fiction, as will names like Larry Niven and Norman Spinrad - who also penned adventures for the Marshall family.
If you haven't seen it and this sounds like the sort of thing that appeals to you, then I urge you to check it out. I have and I adore it.
