Movie Review: It must suck to live by crooked cops!
Summary: 5 Stars
When I saw the preview for this movie, I shrugged and figured it'd be another "Training Day." Wrong! I can't decide on which character I'd hate to live next to more because Denzel surely did his thing, but Samuel L. Jackson was another rough cop, except to top off his arrogant and abusive thoughts of criminals, he's racist too. When Abel (the name irony caught me) Turner realized that the two Black folks on the block were father and daughter instead of husband and wife and the "mover" turns out to be the sista's husband, you could just smell the Archie Bunker in him coming out. Only his views weren't comedic. He was flat out hostile. Police lights, vandalism, physical abuse, etc. I can't think of a worse neighbor to have, and Jackson played the hell out of his role. Samuel L. Jackson has a gift for having a full scene with just the expression on his face. He doesn't even have to open his mouth, and you can tell how he's feeling by the way he tilts his head, squints his eyes, and that cool dip walk that he has always had. I enjoyed this movie a lot. I'll probably go see it again just to watch the havoc he creates.
My only complaint, which isn't really a complaint, is the couple were so incredibly NOT street smart. When the "evidence" was found, I wanted to scream at the screen as soon as the "evidence" was used to catch the "criminal." It's not often that I want to yell at movie screens. I don't usually get that wrapped up, but I stomped my feet, slapped my forehead, and sighed a lot through the entire last scene because only two people with 0% street smarts would react like that to the "secret." However, the characters played their role to the tea and that's exactly how someone who isn't used to this type of situation would react. If I say anymore, I'll give away the ending. Anyway, excellent movie. I loved it. Everybody played their roles to the tea, the dialogue was fresh, and the plot was interesting.
Cons: My only con would be that the writer may lose some audience members due to the wife's "forgetfulness." I had zero sympathy for her once I found out about that stunt she pulled--not cute.
