Movie Reviews of Lady for a Day

Movie Review: Another Capra Longshot Hits It Big
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a review of LADY FOR A DAY (1933) a film directed by Frank Capra
very early in his stellar career. Unfortunately, at this date (the end of 2009),
LADY FOR A DAY does not seem to be available as a reasonably priced used DVD
and apparently is out of print.

I saw LADY FOR A DAY on an old videotape and the print that it was copied from did not have very good picture quality which may be the reason that Columbia/Sony, the probable owners, seem to be dragging their feet about releasing this title on a decent quality DVD. Or the reason could be that they want to encourage consumers to buy the 1961 remake, A POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES (1961,) which I have not seen.

Whatever the reason, LADY FOR A DAY should be available to modern day movie fans or Frank Capra buffs at a reasonable price in a watchable DVD without question.

LADY FOR A DAY was directed by Frank Capra from a script by Robert Riskin based on a story by Damon Runyun. It stars May Robson as Appple Annie, the lady who has her day, with Warren William as Dave the Dude and featuring Guy Kibbee, Glenda Farrell and Ned Sparks as well as a generous cast of familiar faces doing what they did best in many of these older films.

LADY FOR A DAY is right up there with AMERICAN MADNESS and just a sliver below
IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT so far as Capra's comedy and entertaining story telling goes.
And of course it has what had already become the Capra storytelling habit
of having the common folks participating in the rescue of the title character
and her fellow schemers and conspirators, all in a good cause, of course.

What a fine film LADY FOR A DAY is and what a shame to let it lay neglected gathering dust when literally thousands could be enjoying what to them would be a new discovery. Too bad LADY FOR A DAY was not included in the Frank Capra box set. I'll give this pretty much unknown treasure five stars and hope that somehow it will be rescued from undeserved obscurity.

Summary of Lady for a Day

A Cinderella fairy tale set in the early 1930s, Lady for a Day is a delightfully charming mix of drama and comedy that earned four Academy Award nominations and propelled Frank Capra to the top ranks of popular filmmakers. Based on a Damon Runyon short story, Lady for a Day tells the tale of Apple Annie, a cantankerous New York City fruit peddler who has been pretending to be a high-society matron in letters to her daughter. When her daughter comes to visit with her aristocratic fiance, Apple Annie enlists her seedy gangster friends, who hilariously transform her into the grandest of dames!
Based on a story by Damon Runyon, this Frank Capra film was nominated for several Oscars® after it was released in 1933 (it was remade by Capra as Pocketful of Miracles in 1961). A tenderhearted Depression-era comedy, it tells the story of Apple Annie (May Robson), a panhandling street vendor who has kept her real identity hidden from a daughter being reared in Europe. When the grown-up daughter comes to New York for a visit, Annie turns to gambler Dave the Dude (Warren William) for help. He transforms her--temporarily--into a high-society grande dame, but not without complications. The film is nearly stolen by Guy Kibbee, as a judge posing as Annie's husband, but Warren William, a John Barrymore lookalike, and dour Ned Sparks get laughs too. --Marshall Fine
