Movie Review: A Movie I Will Never Forget--Too Bad The Academy Awards Did
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first saw this fabulous movie in 1972, I was completely awestruck. I couldn't even move from my seat, so I paid to watch it again. While Diana Ross was totally cheated out of the Academy Award for Best Actress, the movie itself was maligned when it did not receive the other top nominations--Best Picture of the Year, Best Actor (Billy Dee Williams), and Best Director (Sidney J. Furie). Moreover, it would not be a stretch to state that Richard Pryor deserved a nod for Best Supporting Actor. In my mind, Lady Sings the Blues was the very best of 1972, but politics and prejudice interfered with the acclamation the movie should have earned. I don't know that the film is technically a musical, but it is the closest thing to one I can think of, that I completely enjoyed.

Having watched it on the small screen, I can say that a fair amount of the majesty of the film is lost, but the performances are still just as satisfying today as they were in 1972.

Movie Review: Lady Sings The Blues 5 Stars

I'm 30 years old, and even though the movie was out 5 years before I was born, I love that movie. My mom and my dad went to see it in the movies when it first hit the theatres, so I had the privilege to see it. My mom told me all about the movie. She had the soundtrack of that movie in vinyl!!!!!!! I remember when I first watched it on TBS when I was 15 years old, and I couldn't believe my eyes. Diana played a helluva role as Billie Holiday. Billy Dee Williams was the sexiest man alive. I wish I was my age back then. He was gorgeous!!!! Ever since I saw that movie, I was addicted to it. I was so happy that it was on DVD. Richard Pryor was funny as hell in that movie. I think that this was the best role that Richard Pryor played in next to Jo Jo Dancer: Your Life Is Calling. He had me dying in Lady Sings The Blues. A lot of black female artists used this movie to make a music video out of it. This movie influenced a lot of black artists to base it on their videos. I love Lady Sings The Blues. I own the DVD now, and I'm wearing it out. Diana Ross should've won an Academy Award for Best Actress for that role, but I guess at the time, they weren't ready to give such an award to a black woman. This is a classic that everybody should enjoy! I LOVE YOU, DIANA!!!!!!!

Movie Review: Undoubtedly a Classic!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I FINALLY received the DVD of a movie I have loved through the years. While we can all regale each other with stories of Miss Ross' idiosycrasies, one thing is patently clear: She WORKED this movie and this is the best singing I have EVER heard from her (or since, for that matter and I was a DIEHARD Supermes fan!)

It is also especially wonderful to see some wonderful African-American treasures like Richard Pryor, Billy Dee, Isabel Sanford, Scatman Scrothers, among others. (I wish I knew Lorraine's name as the quintessential madam who was positively flawless!!!!)

The production values are superior and the sound recreated for the DVD was a MUST because the movie is based on music. Listening to Diana sing "The Man I Love" and hear Billy Dee say "You want my arm to fall off?!" is worth the price of admission.

I haven't even had a chance to look at the special features or deleted scenes which I am sure will round out what I consider to be a classic African-American feature.

I HIGHLY recommend!!!

Movie Review: Good Night, Lady...
Summary: 5 Stars

Regardless of the historical inaccuracies of this film, like many other "biography" films, to pick apart such an outstanding work of art is to me a waste of time. If that is what you want to do, then go dumpster diving, and pick through the garbage to find a diamond.
Because you'll have just as much luck.

This masterpiece, shows Miss Ross, in her most outstanding performance from the early 1970's, yet!!! And further trivia, this was her VERY FIRST ACTING ROLE!!! Never before, had she even acted in ANY movie before, and yet to see this movie, to see her brilliant, and poignant portrayal of the legendary singer, Billie Holiday is not to be missed. A MUST SEE. For both Billie Holiday fans, and Miss Diana Ross fans alike.

Movie Review: Ms. Ross is Lady DAY!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Diana Ross totally blew me away in this movie. I remember seeing this movie as a young child with my parents. I was so disappointed when I saw and heard the real Billie Holiday because in my mind, Diana Ross was Billie Holiday. I know jazz purists and those who know Billie Holiday's 'true story' will have a problem with the fictional embellishments of Lady Day's life; however, it doesn't take anything away from Billie Holiday's legacy. If anything, the film probably inspired folks who were/are unfamiliar with Holiday to search out her music and learn more about her short and somewhat tragic life. I highly recommend this movie...it has great acting, great costumes, great photography, and most importantly -- great music.
