Movie Reviews of Ladies in LavenderMovie Review: Classic Benchmark Summary: 5 Stars
The history of Dench and Smith is quite evident in this superb film. It's not so common anymore to find a movie that radiates with the magnificent talent of established/seasoned actresses like Dench and Smith--this will sure be a classic benchmark in years to come.
This ground-breaking plot sees Dench's character falling madly in love with young man--young enough to be her grandson--and shows emotions unseen in films with similar plot.
The movie is not only substantial, but the talent of the lead cast is more than reason enough to see it.
Movie Review: It Doesn't Get More British Than This. Summary: 5 Stars
Judi Dench and Maggie Smith face to face. This is reason enough to see this movie or any other movie. Supperb lesson of acting by The Dames and everybody else in the cast.
Recreation of the era, cinematography, music; specially music, all adds to the viewing pleasure of this crepuscular competition for love.
If you like your typical British movie setting in a bygone era with excruciating attention to detail, kind of on the lines of James Ivory, you will be delighted with this one.
And, did I mention those Dames...
Movie Review: Poignant, heartwarming, exquisite violin by Joshua Bell Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this movie! It was so sweet, and so poignant. It reminds me of the saying, "Is it better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all." This movie about about 2 old sisters in 1936 Cornwall, England who rescues a young man washed ashore on the beach. They take him into their home and nurse him back to health. One of the sisters falls secretly in love with him. This is an enchanting movie, well directed, well acted, and the music soundtrack is exquisitely orchestrated, especially the violinist, Joshua Bell. I saw the movie twice.
Movie Review: Ladies in Lavender Summary: 5 Stars
If you enjoy well written screen plays, a more gentile culture than in the USA, Old World flavor this is a must see.
Pure enjoynment. The story is subtle on the surface but has deep undercurrents and you wish you knew the story of all the main characters. One of the best films I've seen in ages. Wonderfully preformed with nothing tasteless or foul as so many films are today. If you went only for Judi Dench and Maggie Smith you wouldn't be dissapointed but this film is so much more. I can hardly wait for the DVD.
Movie Review: SUPERLATIVES FOR THIS CINEMATIC ENDEAVOR Summary: 5 Stars
It is impossible to fully express all the pleasure and joy I obtained through witnessing this British film; what a magnificent, thought-provoking and rewarding tour-de-force awaits the viewer! Prepare yourself for an intellectually stimulating, touching fragment of human experience rarely portrayed on screen, yet totally believable here in its sensitive between-world-wars portrayal. The dazzling English cinematography is superb and totally nestles within the plot.
