Movie Reviews of Ladies in LavenderMovie Review: soft-hued lavender... Summary: 5 Stars
This is for those who enjoy the works of Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. Daniel Bruhl doesn't harm your eyes either. The story is joyously light but deep, the characters of Maggie Smith and Judi Dench are superbly played. It's like sibling rivalry, but not sibling rivalry. It's jealousy,
but not jealousy. Ah, life! So simple and complicate. I guess that's why life is beautiful...like lavenders swaying by the wind.
And the music throughout! Gorgeously played by Joshua Bell, and it decorated this movie and made me run to the record shop to get the cd after I've finished watching this underrated gem.
A warning though, this is a film for those who loves "talkie" romance drama genre...of the old kind(pun not intended!).
Enjoy!!!
Movie Review: Hits a Tender Spot Summary: 5 Stars
Based on the short story of the same name by William J. Locke, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench play aging sisters Janet and Urusla, living in Cornwall who discover a body washed up on their coastline. They nurse this barely alive young Polish man back to the land of the living and learn quite by accident that he is a talented violinist. In nursing him and learning to communicate with him, quite a few emotions are surfaced by the sisters, one who has lost a husband to war and one who has never had a chance to love.
Billed as a sort of fairytale, complete with a wicked witch who swoops in and changes everyone lives, this wonderful coming of age (even if you are 60) story hits a tender spot and make you realize that a crush can happen at any age.
Movie Review: Great actress, wonderful scene with excellent classic music Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the movie recommended when I was reading the information about Mrs. Henderson Present. I bought the movie simply out of the good rating and did not even consider the part of the classic music. Well, where they filmed the movie is just so beautiful that my mother enjoyed it so much and watched it twice already. I did not know that Joshua Bell could play the voilin so well until I heard the music at the end. The actress for both elderly adies are excellent. It is amazing that the director could come up with such a nice piece for such a simple short stories. I wish there were more of this kind of movies that both generation can enjoy and share.
Movie Review: Well done film Summary: 5 Stars
The Widington sisters, Janet and Ursula, lived a quiet life off the beach in Cornwall until one day when a storm tossed up a young Polish man. The two nurse him back to health, spending their own meager funds to help clothe and heal him. This is just before WWII and the British are highly suspicious of any foreigner, particularly when Andrea (the young Polish man) takes up with Olga, a Russian artist.
If I could give 4.5 stars I would, the only problem I had was it was difficult to establish time and place very well with this film. Still, it was immensely enjoyable, well filmed and beautifully acted. Kudos to the whole cast!
Movie Review: A slice of Heaven Summary: 5 Stars
For me this movie is the type of movie for a slow Sunday when you think, oh I have nothing to do but then you think oh I can watch my Ladies in Lavender. And when you are watching it, the swollen emotional ache that is etched across Judi's face is just so touching. It is just heartbreaking to see her realize everything she has missed out on. Then with the intrusion of their lives that Andrea is, she gets to have a little glimpse of that life only to have it pulled right out from under her. My heart just breaks for her as I watch. This movie is just a sliver of what Judi and Maggie are capable of. They are magnificent.
