Movie Reviews of Ladies in LavenderMovie Review: Just perfect! Summary: 5 Stars
The beautiful coast of Cornwall is the backdrop for a subtle and powerful drama that has truly captured my heart. Actresses Judi Dench and Maggie Smith are superb in this story which is really about the inner life, the inner emotions that no one can see. Screenplay writer and director Charles Dance, the wonderful actor, based the story on an old book he came across. Through his screenplay, he has given us permission to feel whatever it is that we feel when it comes to love (acting on those feelings is or course another matter entirely). There are several moments in the film that deeply effected me. Who could ever imagine that the hesitantly placed hand of the character Ursula (Dench), atop the head of a young violinist, one third her age, could be so highly charged, so full of eros and tension. Absolutely amazing. Not mainstream cinema, thank God, but better, much better. A rose among...peat moss!
Movie Review: A touching story Summary: 5 Stars
This film features Judi Dench and Maggie Smith at their best. This is a touching and sad story of two sisters whose quiet and ordered world is set reeling by the arrival of a young stranger when he is washed up on the beach near their lonely cottage.
During the film we get to meet many of the neighbors and friends in the area, and experience the anxiety which the boy and another newly-arrived girl engender in the inhabitants of this pre-World War II Cornish village.
The setting for the story is beautiful, and the emotional scenes are well balanced by some lively humor. The film ends with some vital questions left unanswered, such as where did the lad come from, why was he washed up, why was he going to the USA, etc. However, despite this, the film is exceptional and charming and will be loved by anyone who enjoys period British drama.
Movie Review: A Gem of a Film Summary: 5 Stars
Any film with Judy Densch and Maggie Smith is worth seeing, no matter what! Having said that, this lovely film shows the life of 2 spinster sisters happily entrenched in their predictable lives in 1930's Cornwall, England. Finding a young man (played brilliantly by Daniel Bruel) washed up on the shore near their home shakes things up a bit. One review called the movie sorted but I don't think that there are many women over 40 who haven't looked fondly at a beautiful young man and remembered younger days. The performance by Daniel Bruel is brilliant not because of his acting but because of his violin "playing". You would swear that he was actually playing. My favorite scene is when Daniel plays at a barn dance and wins over the town. Take a chance on this film - it is definately worth your time.
Movie Review: A diamond among the stones... Summary: 5 Stars
I just received and watched Ladies in Lavender and really never even heard of it before and ordered it on the strength of Judi Dench being in it. I was not disappointed in this beautiful film. I loved the acting, the scenery and the music was absolutely wonderful. People have complained about the plot being thin, the ending not explaining questions that supposedly were not answered to some critical viewers satisfaction. THAT did not bother me. I enjoyed a beautiful simple story that made me laugh, weep and cheer with joy as I watched it and at the end I reluctantly left it in my DVD player until I can find the time to have the peace and quiet to replay it again and again to my utter and complete hearts content. This is a simple and uncomplicated film that to me was charming and very endearing.
Movie Review: A Must to See for Fans of - JUDI DENCH Summary: 5 Stars
For Me, this movie is up there with, The Last of the Blonde Bombshells. A Very Nice Movie that in a way keeps you wondering what's next. I hated for the end of the film to come as I could see more of it continue. It is a film that seems straight forward but leaves a part undisclosed to think about, as it goes along. Judi was awesome, as usual but in a role alittle different than a lot of her films, which is Great! Set in the 1930's a Very Beatuiful Coastal Country Side. Her part is somewhat sad in parts but wishing it was better for her, in the film. It is Funny, Emotional, pretty much All feelings we go thru in life. A GREAT FILM, YOU SHOULD ALSO LOVE IT AS I DO. JUDI, a Wonderful, Funny, Loving, and Just Plain GREAT ACTOR!!!!! (DVD) AWESOME MOVIE!!!!!
