Movie Reviews of Labyrinth

Movie Review: A great showcase for the genius of Henson Productions, and a just plain great movie
Summary: 5 Stars

It's been a while since I saw this so I decided to sit down and watch it again. Of course, I knew it was good, but I'd forgotten how good. As a story, it's fun and entertaining, very otherwordly, vivid and well-executed. But what really sets it apart is the imagination that went into it, from the writing and direction to the amazing puppetry.

I hate actually using the word "puppets". It's not strong enough for what Henson does here. These are fully realized, fully living characters. The scene where the goblin king dances and sings in his castle is just so full of life it's easy to forget that these are just dolls without the brilliant puppeteers pulling their strings.

As for the story, it's fun. A subtle coming of age journey tempered with genuinely touching moments and inspired side treks into high silliness. The acting, both human and puppet, is great.

This film is terrific and just gets better with age. Great for kids. Great for adults. Rightly deserving of the title: MASTERPIECE.

Movie Review: An excellent feel good puppet adventure
Summary: 5 Stars

Jim Henson was quoted as saying, in the DVD special feature Inside the Labyrinth A Documentary, "when I go to a movie I want to feel better coming out than I did going in". This is exactly the case with this fun puppet adventure.

Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie make a great pair, battling each other for baby Toby. David Bowie is Jareth the goblin king. Jennifer Connelly is Sarah, Toby's sister. After getting stuck babysitting a crying child, Sarah wishes that the goblin king would come and take Toby far away. When her wish comes true Sarah is forced to go through the labyrinth to the goblin city, and get back her baby brother back.

Of coarse, it's sounds easier than it turns out to be. Sarah finds many pitfalls along the way, and some interesting friends as well. The puppeteering is incredible, engineering the plot to a higher level, and also spurring many humorous moments. This film is a perfect example of Jim Henson's creative expertise, and a wonderful film that will leave you with a grin on your face.

Movie Review: You remind me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was 5 (I'm 18 now) I used to run for this tape at our local Blockbuster. I LOVED this movie...and at such a young age I couldn't really appreciate the wittiness of it. Now that I'm older, and have approximately seen this movie 1,000 times, I still love it. There is just something so magical about it. To me, Sarah was the quinessential young girl bordering on adulthood. She definitly had Peter Pan syndrome, but that was ok. Sarah was also gutsy, she had the gall to do something most older siblings only dreamed about...sending her younger brother Toby to the goblins. So when the hunky Gobling King, Jareth (played by a superb David Bowie) came to fufill her wish...she rebelled. And then being faced with solving the labyrinth in 13 hours she had the guts to actually SOLVE it. This movie is excellent. Good music, lots of adventure, and the age old story of a young girl finding herself in the fairytale land of her dreams. But Sarah is no Alice in Wonderland...so give this movie a go. And you might find yourself in the Underground.

Movie Review: Best DVD I own!
Summary: 5 Stars

I think I was a little too old for this movie when it originally came out. As a teen I thought it was a kid flick. In my 20s me and my 10 year old nephew rented it and laughed our heads off (especially the scenes with the creatures tossing body parts around). Now I'm in my 30s and it is the best DVD I own. The DVD really shows the colors well. Love the sky, the distant shots of the maze, and Jennifer shows up nicely too near the beginning. I first saw Connelly in Once Upon A Time In America. Lovely actress. Check her out in Dark City too. As far as the sound, it is better than you can imagine. Bowie's songs will have you singing along even if you don't want to. The detail is startling. Henson's team works magic! The attention to detail on each creature is amazing. And it all comes out clearer than ever before thanks to DVD! As far as extras I didn't need them. However, the expected trailer, talent files and unexpected "making of" documentary are nice to have. Henson fans should have this on your shelf.

Movie Review: Very Special
Summary: 5 Stars

Every so often a movie comes out that defies all the odds and turns out to be something real special. Different genres are represented by at least one movie that makes this grade. eg 'The Matrix' for action sci fi, 'lord of the Rings' for fantasy, 'Saving Private Ryan' for war movies etc. Labyrinth has the distinction of being in this celebrated company, but in which category? It has elements of a musical, puppetry, fantasy and it's a children's and adults genre. This combination, coupled with the amazing voice of David Bowie and puppetry of Jim Henson is part of what makes this movie wonderful viewing. The wacky fantasy storyline has surprisingly found empathy with both adult and child alike. There is subtlety in the movie as well, which will only be obvious to adults and which poses some tantalisingly hidden questions about the movie and the main actor. Somehow this movie just weaves a fantasmical story, which draws you in and is just fun and tantalising, from beginning to end. In my humble opinion, Labyrinth is a classic
