Movie Reviews of LabyrinthMovie Review: Magical, witty, musical, Marvelous! Summary: 5 Stars
Whenever you buy for children, movies, you need to use may different check lists. With this movie, you can sit down and enjoy the film with your kids, too. For the storyline, a girl about 13 gets snagged into her favorite book's tale, the Labyrinth. She is instructed that she has 13 hours to solve the unique maze in order to save her baby brother. The Goblin King, played terrifically by David Bowie, has kidnapped the baby and keeps him entertained with his goblin subjects (Jim Henson's team
of genius) with song and dance and magic. Throughout the movie,
Sarah (the 14 year old girl) confronts characters and situations
imbedded in this Labyrinth filled with intriguing surprises. My
two-year old nephew visits with one priority, "see the goblins"
He loves it. The musical scores are great. The little life messages are a nice touch. Even our kid-sitter gets into the film, she's 12. For comparable selections: the Neverending story, March of the Wooden Soldiers (the old one with Laurel and Hardy, the same one that inspired Walt Disney to do cartoon films!) and the Princess Bride. As for the DVD extras, you can see a lot of magic as to how some of the tricks were done, muppet/puppet/actor tricks, chats with main characters including David Bowie, and the music. Great purchase!
Movie Review: Through dangers untold... Summary: 5 Stars
It's hard to believe that when Labyrinth was released in June of '86 it didn't do well. People weren't impressed. Some people say that things get better with age. Maybe this is also true with films.Labyrinth is the ultimate fantasy adventure story. Sarah, the heroine, has to find her way through the magical labyrinth to get her baby brother back from the evil Goblin King. Along the way she makes friends and enemies as she fights temptation and reminds us what is truly important. The release of this DVD was a long-time coming. It was worth the wait. Presented in wide-screen, that means we can see all of the goblins in hidden in the drawers and not just the one speaking, and Dolby Surround. The picture quality is good and the hauting soundtrack has been captured excellently. Also included on the disc is the original cinema trailer and the original production featurette "Inside the Labyrinth". Probably as valuable, if not more, as the film itself. It's a facinating glimpse into the making of a masterpiece. Including interviews from the cast and crew and, more importantly, the Muppet master himself, Jim Henson. This movie is probably more popular now than it has ever been and for good reason. And for just over ... bucks it's a movie must for anyone who is young or just young at heart.
Movie Review: One of Fantasy's Best Summary: 5 Stars
"Labyrinth" is one of those very special fantasy films on a very short list, and most films on that list came out of the 1980s ("Legend," "Willow," etc.). And yet this adventure is unlike any other, coupled with its surrealism, the brilliant use of detailed puppets, and its somewhat intellectual, and quite hilarious, sense of humor. The plot revolves around Sarah and her baby brother Toby, whom she repentantly summons into the realm of the goblins and their king, portrayed wonderfully by David Bowie (though I would rather he got rid of the tights). She then takes it upon herself to rescue him, and in the process unites with several very interesting companions. All of this is handled in a setting devoid of violence, and occasionally the characters WILL break into song. But make no mistake, this is not a movie only to be enjoyed by children (though they will certainly enjoy it, just as I did when I was a child). This is a movie for the entire family - and I dare say that adults may appreciate its depth and escapism even more. And though I've never been a fan of musicals (and this movie is a mild form of the musical), here I take exception. I even enjoy the music, what's more. "Labyrinth" is a brilliant fantasy film, plain and simple.
Movie Review: Timeless magic Summary: 5 Stars
On its release this little gem of a film was overlooked and was not the hit it deserved to be. Sarah (a young Jennifer Connolly) is a teenager with her head in the clouds, living in a fantasyland of knights in armour, goblins and fairy tales. She greatly resents her stepmother and her baby half-brother Toby. Whilst babysitting one night she gets frustrated with the constantly crying baby and wishes he would be taken away by goblins. To her horror the goblins oblige and Toby is whisked away to the castle of the goblin king (played surprisingly well by David Bowie).
Sarah has to journey through the labyrinth of the king in order to rescue him. Along the way she is befriended by a variety of strange and wonderful beings who accompany her on her way; Hoggle the grumpy dwarf, Ludo the hairy giant with a gentle soul and Sir Didymuss, a terrier type 'knight' with an Old English Sheepdog for a steed. The labyrinth twists and changes as the Goblin King tries to thwart Sarah's quest.
Jim Henson's workshop has worked its usual magic and produced puppets that have character and appeal to young and old alike. The film is littered with songs that are written by and performed by David Bowie. This film is pure magic that will entertain any age group.
Movie Review: Fiary tale with a plot of "be careful what you ask for, it may come true." Summary: 5 Stars
Teenager who wishes and lives in a fantasy world of being a princess. She doesn't want to socialize with family, stays in her room and dreams, one of which is that she wishes her little sister would go away so whe would not have to babysit while her mom and dad when out. Her fantasy world of escape eventually takes her there. Where at the end of her journey through this maze of craziness she meets her prince who is David Bowie, who looks gorgeous. She comes in contact with many different bizaar, and strange creatures through her journey. The movie is quite old, made before all the computers and electronics got involved with movies; so therefore all the bizzare beings she comes in contact with are done with the upmost creativity of makeup and customes. It left a great impression upon me at one time, and I bought it for my grandchildren who are in their teens. They too, have many wishes, and like to escape from everyday reality. So, this movie I felt will give them a reality check that everything isn't always what it seems. Movie was well made, no parental review needed, colorful, creative, lost of surprises, moves at a good pace as not to lose interest, very realistic, and David Bowie makes this movie really speical.
