Movie Reviews of LabyrinthMovie Review: One of the best fantasies I've ever seen Summary: 5 Stars
The one thing that teenage Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) hates the most is her baby brother Toby. One night, when Sarah is forced to babysit Toby against her will, she makes a wish that he would be taken by the Goblin king, where he would be forced to live as a goblin. She didn't mean it, of course. But her wish has been granted. Jareth (David Bowie), the King of the Goblins, has kidnapped Toby and taken him to his castle. If Sarah ever wants him back, she'll have to get to the center of a gigantic labyrinth where anything is possible and nothing is as it seems.
LABYRINTH is truly a wonderful fantasy movie that will bring out the inner spirit in any adult. It's got everything a fantasy needs. Fairy tale creatures, tons of humor, and definitely tons and tons of magic. One of the things that make this a-better-than average fantasy is the people who work on it. David Bowie supplies tons of great songs for this movie that any fan will want to hear. Also, Jim Henson takes a break from the Muppets and provides some interesting looking puppets for this film.
A great thing that LABYRINTH has going for it is its suspense. Right as Sarah enters the labyrinth, you'll be on your toes, hoping she'll make it out alive. Of course, there are plenty of times when Sarah could've certainly ended up dead, but it's a fantasy. Along with suspense is romance. David Bowie plays a character deeply in love. Forget the fact that he's probably over a few centuries old, and she's only a teenager. This is definitely a must-see for any fantasy fan who hasn't seen it yet.
Movie Review: I Wish I Could Give It A Million Stars- A Review By Mary Sanders Summary: 5 Stars
I loooooove this movie! I saw it for the first time when I was twelve, and I adored it.
The one of the biggest reasons I loved this movie is because it was a fairy tale and fantasy. I myself, love fairy tales and fantasy, and wished more than enough times I could solve a lybrinth like in this film.
Anyway, this movie is about a teenage girl named Sarah who loves to act and read fairy tales. She's kind of a brat, but oh well. Anyway, her father has remarried and now she has a stepmother and a new half brother. She doesn't like her stepmother, and one night while she is babysitting her brother, she is annoyed by his constant crying, and wishes goblins would come take him away. But her wish comes true, and suddenly she realizes her brother is gone, and the goblin king comes to see her (played by a then, quite handsome, and infamous British rock star David Bowie), his name is Jareth, and he tells her she has thirteen hours to solve the lybrinth and get to his castle or he will turn her brother into a goblin forever.
I believe King Jareth was in love with Sarah, and in a way tricked her by bringing her brother into the lybrinth, so he could convince her to stay with him forever(which he tries to do at the end of the film), and had no intention of turning her brother into a goblin at all.
Well anyway, while trying to solve the lybrinth Sarah meets up with awesome beings. I will say no more, but if you love fairy tales and beautiful music, BUY THIS
Movie Review: Wow. Summary: 5 Stars
When I was 11 years old, running around the local Blockbuster, I saw a clip on one of the in-store TV's that made me stop and watch. A girl, who actually looked very similar to myself and was named Sarah, strangely enough, was inching across a crumbling stone ledge, accompanied by an odd-looking dwarf. My curiosity was piqued.Later I found out that this movie was called Labyrinth. Despite not being the avid fantasty fan that I am now, I still wanted to see it. I'm 15 now (Sarah's age in the movie...creepy!), and I just saw Labyrinth for the first time this winter. Now, I consider myself a huge fan. I've watched it three times during my spring break, and I'm planning on purchasing both the DVD and the soundtrack CD. Reasons for watching? -If you're a guy, Jennifer Connelly is admittedly very pretty (if you can sit through the beginning...she's quite..melodramatic.) -If you're a girl, four words: DAVID BOWIE, EXTREME PANTS. Quite funny, actually. But let me just say, oddly and unexpectedly, David as Jareth is one of the sexiest things I've seen in my young life. Oh-so-evilly-bish. -If you appreciate a good technical production, the old-school effects and puppetry might appeal to you. Ditto for Henson fans. How about THIS reason: the movie is amazing! At times, the dialogue might seem cutesy or redundant, but in general, this movie is great. The music's not half bad, either. As the world falls DOOOOOWN......
Movie Review: A MAZE OF WONDERS! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is a timeless classic. I first saw it on its theatrical release and still love it as much now as I did then. Its fantastic characters and enchanting sets make this a beatiful and magical tale, which could only be created by the artistic genius of Jim Henson's workshop. Now with this Dvd release, the film has been given a new lease of energy. The improved picture quality really emphasises the films gorgeous colors, really bringing to life the action. The script is blessed with the fantasy of the 'Dark Crystal' (an equally brilliant movie) but with the added mayhem of the Muppet show,it is far more more light hearted. As is standard with Jim Henson movies, there is a wonderful mixture of characters, which interact together brilliantly. The acting may not be the best, but it is important to remember that Jennifer Connelly who plays Sarah (the lead character)was only 14 when she made this movie and is having to act with puppets which can't be easy. The great David Bowie gives a convincig performance as the goblin king, providing musical interludes, which admittedly, I found somewhat tedious as a youngster but enjoy now. All the elements blend to make a lively, innocent adventure movie which will be enjoyed by all ages. The Dvd also provides a wonderful trove of extras, including a delightful 'making of' documentary which gives some really interesting insights to the movies creation.
Movie Review: Fantasy come to life Summary: 5 Stars
I almost gave this movie four stars, until I realized how many times I've come back to it. It really is worth watching again and again.
The story's opening should appeal to many kids: teenaged Sara rebels at the baby-sitting duties that interfere with her vivid fantasy life. She would never hurt the child, but creates a fairy tale around her frustration. In this story, the beautiful princess (Sara, of course) is set free when denizens of Fairy-land abduct the evil infant. Then, suddenly, the fairy tale becomes real.
The story is Sara's quest to recover the lost child from Jared, played by David Bowie. He works well as the world's dark lord, even if his song scenes seemed gratuitous. Sara traverses the mythic Labyrinth guided, misguided, and befriended by beings from Jim Henson's wonderful imagination. This is the true magic of "Labyrinth," the sustained vision, comical and fantastical, of Brian Froud's world peopled by Henson's creatures. The whole world is simply amazing - and it goes on, in changing scenes and amazing detail, for the rest of the movie.
This is a wonderful kids' movie, with no real violence or adult themes, and with a happy ending. It does have a dark edge, however, that may scare the very youngest. Although it's a kids' movie, the kids are optional. Feel free to enjoy it just for yourself.
