Movie Review: Very highly recommended

I have to say up front that I love this version of `La Traviata' and, while I agree with the reviewer who says that it should not be the first version that one should acquire, if you have others this will give a totally new (and appropriate) outlook on this most popular of Verdi's compositions. I already own the 1982 Zefferelli version from the Met, the 1994 Royal Opera House Covent Garden version with Angela Gheorghiu, the 2004 La Fenice production with Patrizia Ciofi, the 2005 from Madrid with Norah Amsellem, the 2006 Los Angeles Opera version with Renee Fleming and the 2008 La Scala, again with Angela Gheorghiu so, why buy another version? The answer is simply Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon.

This 2005 Salzburg Festival production is the complete antithesis of `grand opera'. Apart from a number of sofas and a huge clock, there is nothing in the way of scenery. All of the chorus (men and women) are suited in black and the women are made-up to appear as men with Netrebko, who is seen wearing either a short simple red dress or else a simple white slip, always visible. I am amazed how effective this is on concentrating ones attention on the three main participants in this drama. Much credit is also due to Brian Large (probably the most experienced and gifted video director around) who never, for one moment lets what is happening on the stage drag on a moment longer than is necessary. His composition of the opening scenes of the opera is particularly effective.

Although there are a few negative reviews listed here, I suppose you cannot please everyone. If you are an elderly person with a background going back many decades of watching traditional versions of `Traviata' this may not appeal but, if you like great singing and acting and don't mind a modern slant on probably the most famous `good-time girl' in drama, you will really enjoy this. The fact that this is available in Blu-ray with high definition audio and video at a fair price is a bonus not to be missed.
