Movie Review: It Doesn't Get Much Weirder

"La Casa del Terror" is the original Mexican version of what would become a really lousy Jerry Warren adaptation called "Face of the Screaming Werewolf." What Warren overlooked was that the original is not just a horror film, but also a musical comedy. Mexican comic German "Tin Tan" Valdes stars as a shlump who works in a wax museum that is really a front for a mad doctor, who manages to revive an Egyptian mummy, who is really a werewolf. With me so far? Lon Chaney pantomimes the part of the mummy/werewolf (and while Chaney spoke Spanish in "Bride of the Gorilla," he may not have been fluent enough for a genuine Mexican film, resulting in only the occasional grunt), and he seems to be having as good a time as possible. His werewolf makeup is a direct nod to Jack Pierce's "Wolf Man" get-up, but as the mummy he looks like he was attacked by a group of fourth-graders wielding paste jars. It hardly matters, though, since this film in its original form was not meant to be taken seriously. Tin Tan is pretty funny in any language, and costar Yerye Beirut--"The Mexican Boris Karloff"--has his creepy moments (he actually resembles Karloff, and a decade later worked with him). The climax of the film has Chaney in full werewolf drag climbing the side of a building with a woman draped over his shoulder...shades of "King Kong"!...which is simply the kitchen sink moment on top of this funny, creepy, lively, demented, one-of-a-kind film. Except for Warren's bastardization, the original has never been dubbed into English, but it doesn't matter. Even if you don't understand Spanish, you'll enjoy the movie for what it is.
