Movie Reviews of La Cage Aux FollesMovie Review: Serrault is the best! Summary: 5 Stars
I would have given La Cage Aux Folles three marks at best, for while it is a pleasent French comedy, not different in style to many French comedies of the period, it has one major asset that distinguishes it from all others, Michel Serrault. He plays the camp 'queenie' star of the show La Cage Aux Folles to perfection..He is simply great. The first La Cage..is the best, the sequel I believe was made because of the huge success the original had, but still Serrault gives his best in every scene, while dont bother with the third installement, it is simply lame.. Yet beware of the American remake 'Birdcage', if you want the same story with no subtitles, because it is simply awful, and stick to the original, even if you do not understand a word of French, Serrault's genuis performance will be more than enough to make you laugh very hard!
Movie Review: Absolutely Fabulous!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
La Cage Aux Folles is a hilarious French farce that spawned two sequels, a Broadway musical, and an equally good, but almost scene for scene remake (The Birdcage). Some people have said the film has stereotyped gay characters and that Serrault's constant screaming is annoying. I disagree--I found nothing offensive about the characters (gay men like Serrault exist, we've all met them!) and his screaming is actually very funny and brilliantly duplicated by Nathan Lane in the remake. This is a great film, funny, touching, and simply wonderful. It was nominated for 3 Academy Awards and won the Golden Globe for best Foriegn Film. How many gay-themed films can you say that about? P.S. Please ignore the R rating--the subject matter, which was pretty risky for 1978, has gotten rather tame. By today's standards, the film would easily get a PG-13.
Movie Review: La Cage Aux Folles Summary: 5 Stars
Before "The Birdcage" and the glitzy stage musical of the same name, Molinari's uproarious farce crossed boundaries to become a big international hit. Campy and outrageously off-kilter in the tradition of the best Hollywood comedies, "La Cage" thrives on the credibly affectionate performances of Tognazzi and Serrault, brilliant as the flamboyant Albin and his drag-queen alter ego, ZaZa. Adding to the fun is Michel Galabru, the snobby father-in-law-to-be who heads an organization called the Union of Moral Order. Through it all, Molinari's antic, assured direction keep the high-strung hysterics at a soulful pitch.
Movie Review: Very Very Funny !! Summary: 5 Stars
This original version of the ' Birdcage ' Is SO Much funnier than the english Amerikan version with Robin Williams! People, If you like good comedy, these ' La Cage ' Movies are the BEST!!.'La Cage Aux Folles ' will make you laugh so hard, you will have tears rolling down! Just a petty I'm not finding the 3rd. episode. This is the very 1st ORIGINAL La Cage, and sure worth adding to any collection. My wife is French, and I had never the idea I would be watching a foreign movie, but this one convinced me.
Movie Review: La Gage Is Le Creme'!! Summary: 5 Stars
Perhaps this is your first time viewing La Gage Aux Folles, though I can't imagine it would be since La Cage is perhaps one of the funniest films ever made. Not only does humor take center stage but La Cage Aux Folles is the first film to portray a gay couple as "everyday" people...This film will keep you laughing from frame one and if by chance this IS the first time you've seen this film, you are in for a real treat...
