Movie Reviews of La Bamba

Movie Review: Tragedy instead of cliche
Summary: 5 Stars

With the release of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Storythe last possible rock biopic, it's probably time to look at one of several movies that defied the cliches of the genre.
La Bamba is the title song and dance craze (para bailar La Bamba. . .)in the story of Ricardo Valenzuela who becomes Richie Valens and whose life ended tragically in the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly. The presence of the tragedy and the ending that's filled with grief instead of triumph makes this movie strangely immune to the sappiness of most rock movies. Excellent performances by Lou Diamond Phillips and Los Lobos mean that it's a film you can see more than once.
Walk Hard will probably kill the genre: no one will be able to look at most music movies with a straight face again, but La Bamba will survive.

Movie Review: Ka-boom! It really was 'La Bomb-a' !
Summary: 5 Stars

I just watched 'La Bamba' and have only one comment to make: if this is the Sonny Bono story, why does it star Lou D. Phillips? He doesn't look anything like him and where did I miss Cher in this story? He never sang any of those songs, and they show him dying way before he really did and not in the same way. Sonny Bono died in a skiing accident, not in a plane crash in Iowa. My god, whoever wrote this got the plot completely wrong, the characters grossly confused with other ones, and the time line all wrong. If this had been the Richie Valens story, it would be pretty accurate. Over all, I'll give it a 5 for effort. I'm off now to do commentary on the 'Richie Valens Story' which has somehow got Sonny Bono and Cher in the starring roles...

Movie Review: I love this stuff!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm the father of a budding musician and I once played the small town American Legion hall, and high school hops, coming out of the garage. Valence's manager may dispute some of the details of this movie, but it's not History Channel, it's a movie, and I could relate to a lot of the details concerning early musicianship. It had a nice, REAL feel to it. Now I can better appreciate Los Lobos, too, who participated in musical aspects of the movie. I watch Valence's first encounter with "La Bamba" over and over again. The transformation of classical/folk guitar to electric fascinates me.

If you liked "Almost Famous" and "Crossroads" you might want to check this out.

Movie Review: La Bamba
Summary: 5 Stars

The story of rock 'n' roll performer Ritchie Valens, who died in a plane crash in 1959, along with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. This movie is one of the best biographical movies ever made. Every part of movie is perfect: The acting of Lou Diamond Phillips and Esai Morales is amazing. The writing, directing, and visuals are all great. The story gives you eveything you need to know about the the life of Ritchie Valens, his rise to fame with his music, and his tragic death. You realize in so many way's why Ritche became a legend. I highly recommend this movie to everyone. I guarantee you will not be dissapointed after seeing it.

Movie Review: fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this film!! after being introduced to it by my older sister i have never looked back!!! Lou diamond Phillips is amazing as Ritchie Valens and Esai Morales is equally great!!! the supporting cast helps what is already a fab film become a classic!! The soundtrack is great and the end music that they play in the final scenes makes it so emotional. The film really reminds us what a loss it is when someone as talented as Ritchie Valens was dies so young... The film has never stopped making me cry and i am sure i will continue to love this film.. it is a timeless piece which is a fitting tribute to one of Rock n Roll's finest!
