Movie Reviews of Kuffs

Movie Review: A Must-See For Slater Fans
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought the film from this site, but I have been a fan of Slater's since Heathers. It seems like the writers wanted to blend comedy, drama, action and romance and it gets a bit messy, but I enjoyed the film. But this unique style is not for everyone and the Looney Tunes sound effects when Tony Goldwyn feel the effects the drugged coffee may be too much for some. I don't like how some back-cover reviews just say Kuffs left his girlfriend once she gets serious. Although this could have been done to avoid giving away too much of the plot, I think it is important to state he walked away from her once he learned she was pregnant as it explains his maturity level at the start of the film. I heard some people hated how they broke the fourth-wall here and this film was dismissed as a Ferris-Beverly Hills Cop knock-off. There are some inconsistencies and plot holes (how would a college student and high-school drop out meet, especially when they live nearly two hours apart from each other--this was pre-Internet? What would a college woman like Maya see in a ne'er do well like Kuffs--who has no real plan for his life? Was it his looks? Why do Kuffs and the audience just find out about her pregnancy after more than two months--it makes me think she knew but put off telling him, I could do on, but I won't) but to me, this is a decent film. I recommend it for any Slater fan. If you really don't like Slater, this is probably not the film for you as he is in nearly every single scene. It would have been nice if the DVDs had some extras other than the trailer and previews for other films, but I guess it tends not to happen with older films--not sure why. The plot holes may have been addressed in deleted or extended scenes.

Movie Review: DBF (Dumb, But Fun)
Summary: 3 Stars

This is one those movies that my rational side says I shouldn't like, because, really, it's pretty dumb. But it's exactly the right kind of dumb that makes me tell my rational side to shut up for a couple of hours while I enjoy the damn movie, awready!

For instant synopsis, think "Ferris Bueller" meets "Beverly Hills Cop". I don't think we can credit the filmmakers with anything more "high concept" than that, and it's pretty much all you need to know anyway. You've seen the plot before, and the stunts, and all that jazz, so "Kuffs" doesn't waste a lot of time trying to pretend it's terribly original, it just goes for the fun side of all this stuff. It's pretty obvious that Slater's having a great time making this movie, and his enthusiasm's more than a little infectious. The director takes several opportunities to drop the 'fourth wall' and let us know that, after all, it's only a movie, folks (though it never descends into "Airplane!" style zaniness).

I'm not going to claim this is the greatest action/comedy ever made, but it's the kind of thing that either hits you the right way or it doesn't. Check it out, don't expect too much, and maybe it'll hit you the right way, too.

Movie Review: Time travel back to the early to mid 1980's
Summary: 2 Stars

Now exceeding 20 years, this 1980's movie may attract
viewers on account of the big-name actress Ashley Judd in
it, although in reality she's shown for less than 90
seconds in the entire movie, and this in an action
sequence, showing a paint shop getting drilled with
machine gun fire. In that respect, KUFFS will be a major
disappointment for those expecting Judd to be at the
center stage.

In reality, the protagonist is the Jack Nicholson wannabe
or hopeful of the time, Christian Slater as well as the
city of San Francisco. Much like the other movie, also in
San Francisco, (TWISTED with Ashley Judd), that city is
prominently shown in various aspects, namely the world
reknowned bridge, and some surroundings of the area,
parks, hills, etc.

The story is not entirely serious, which is a benefit,
considering most people going to the movies want to relax,
so in this sense, the picture is successful, if not for
the not tasteless but redundant nudity involving Slater
and the lovely and young Milla Jovovich, playing his girlfriend.

The movie, from a visual point of view, works extremely
well, with many varied, sharp, colored and interesting
streets, buildings and filming locations chosen. Anyone
not having done tourism in that city or area will benefit,
much like that which is the case in another movie, showing
Raleigh, NC, "Kiss the Girls" with Morgan Freeman, for example.

There is a focus on the clothes people wear, obviously, as
the characters seem to only wear pastel-colored items that many
for some were trendy at the time, as made clear from other
movies, such as Miami Vice, also from the 80's, for example.
Ironically, in the opening sequence, the bad guy has his mug
shot stenciled onto his pastel T-Shirt, yet is covering his
face with a scarf, to avoid being later recognized. How
his victims would fail to remember to police the image seen on his
T-Shirt, to track him down, is less understood.

The weak spot, clearly, is the music, as it is had considerably
aged and seems considerably unsophisticated. In reality, the music may
or may not be a liability, considering often there's a
discrepancy in tastes and musical experience among the
audience, regardless of age, who themselves are very differnet
from one another.

A a recurring jingle is obviously inspired from the one heard
on Beverly Hills Cop, a big commercial success at about the
same year KUFFS was released.

Overall, KUFFS completely wasted Judd's acting talents, as
only 90 seconds were shown. On the other hand, for those
wanting a light-hearted time travel back to the early to
mid 1980's this is not a bad place to start.

Movie Review: lame
Summary: 1 Stars

Unfunny, perverted prepubescent "humor", obnoxious unlikeable "hero"/leading man, and the cheeziest cheapest sounding music soundtrack of all time to boot. Minus 5 stars.
