Movie Reviews of Kraftwerk: Minimum-Maximum

Movie Review: danke schön Ralf & Florian...
Summary: 4 Stars

It's nice to revitalize memories of seeing Kraftwerk perform in front of my very own eyes. I had been waiting since the release of Computer World to see them on stage, and finally got the chance in 2004 when this DVD was compiled. My experience was well worth the 6 hour plus drive to see them in Canada, where at the end of the show, happened across a crowd gathering at the back of the theater awaiting autographs for anyone that emerged from the building. I recall Ralf stepping out to a frenzy of writing instruments thrust upon him in an orgy of hands. I had my rather large ticket in my own, but no pen ready, and suddenly spied a Sharpie to my right. After asking the person if I could borrow it, he kindly agreed. As soon as that marker touched my skin, I plunged into the pack where Ralf took them both, signed the ticket, then surprisingly turned around, jumped in his limo and sped off. I couldn't believe that without any forethought, I walked away from the show, after 23 years of waiting, with a signed autograph from one of the two most influential persons of my life. Thank you Ralf (und Florian), for your inspiration and continuation of Kraftwerk. This DVD will be a constant reminder of all that you have done, and the hope of things still to come. Prost!

Movie Review: Stunning but Inconsistent
Summary: 4 Stars

For Kraftwerk fans and even those mildly interested, this DVD is well worth getting. As previous reviews indicate, parts of the production are suspect. But some areas are well done. Vitamin is an excellent example and much better mix live. The video for that track is polished, decent transitions, good mix of close-ups and screen, different angles. It alone is worth the price of the DVD. On the other hand, Home Computer, one of the best songs in the concert, is mangled with an amateur pixelation effect that runs the entire song. What a waste! I initially thought I had a defective DVD.

One other note: There are tantalizing bits of footage showing the band members moving sliders and knobs on their work stations. But they never quite show a clear view of the PCs to show whether the band members are simply instant messaging each other or there is something more interesting.

Movie Review: Kraftwerk Is Solid
Summary: 4 Stars

The most boring band in the world has to be Kraftwerk. Four wise-guys just standing in front of what appears to be a laptop, turning knobs and flickin' switches. Let me tell you they make up for it with their sound and artwork.

Their sound is all that. High techno sound with hip rhythms. Their artwork (video in the background) during the show surprised me. They kept their old-school integrity intact. What I mean is their graphics looked like that of the early 1980's. That includes some of their film footage. All of yesteryear. It was great!

I recommend Minimum-Maximum for sure!

Movie Review: When Project right; Best Live show for Sound
Summary: 4 Stars

This 2 DVD set is best viewed and enjoyed on DTS 5.1(5 high quality speakers)with a 150+ watt subwoofer, Wide-screen HDTV-16:9 ratio. Don't view on a 25-27" CRT with buit-in stereo speakers, it won't do the show justice. Nice transition between songs, minimal crowd interaction, and mediocre graphic embellishment. Their is music is "Minimalist", and that is what you get no extra tracks, info, etc. That fits the bill of the mystique of Kraftwerk. Enjoy.

Movie Review: Any extras or bonus material?
Summary: 4 Stars

Finally we got an official Kraftwerk release on DVD and it's awesome. Great track list, audio and visuals. Bottom line, a must have for any Kraftwerk fan. However, like many reviewers said, there's no bonus footage. Interviews, video clips and/or old footage would have been great. Hopefully we get another official release with more historical content some time. In sum, I highly recommend this DVD.
