Movie Reviews of Kiss Me KateMovie Review: Kiss me... Summary: 3 Stars
Although I enjoyed this DVD, I really like the newer edition of Kiss Me, Kate. The costumes in this one are quite loud and the updated edition has more down-to-earth costumes.
Movie Review: Should adapt to wide screen Summary: 3 Stars
Shame that such a great film is not available in wide screen yet. Fitting the format for TV/small screen really takes away from the choreography.
Movie Review: Should have included a Field Sequential 3-D version! Summary: 2 Stars
Not that many people are aware of the Field Field Sequential 3-D .
This is a 3-D TV system that uses special shutter glasses that can be purchased here through Amazon in a set that includes 3 DVD's using this process. This system Is the only way to view a 3-D film effectively on TV to date. The result is about 90% close to the effect you will see in a theatre showing.. like IMAX and Disney and Universal.
These glasses are made of sturdy plastic and clear not these cardboard red and blue pieces of garbage, so you can view the film without constricted to seeing red and blue colors and with this system you will see more actual 3-D depth with the films true colors.. It's really amazing!
For some odd reason the big studios haven't adapted to include a separate version of a 3-D title in this great format.
Films like:
"House of Wax","Kiss Me Kate","Friday the 13th Part 3", "Robot Monster, "Cat Woman on the Moon", "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "Jaws 3" are all now in 2-D DVD, but were originally shown in 3-D and could have been included using the Field Seqential 3-D system on the same disc with the 2-D version.
In Japan in the late 80's there were a few 3-D titles released using Field Sequential 3-D and can be found on e-bay converted to DVD and VHS.
Why aren't the studios producing these now!
I boycott any film DVD release that was originally intended to be seen in 3-D that's only presented in a 2-D version or anaglyph (Red and Blue Glasses).
The studios should really be awaken to this great 3-D system.
Movie Review: Too Darn Dull! Summary: 2 Stars
I have long been a fan of this movie, so I was eagerly awaiting the release of the DVD. Was it worth the wait? Sadly not. The image quality is well below standard - soft with no real definition and the colours appear dull and lifeless. Also I got the impression that the image has been cropped on all sides. This appears particularly evident during the "Too Darn Hot" number- it looks tight and crowded . On the packaging it states that the film is in a format preserving the theatrical exhibition aspect ratio of its "premiere engagements". This I assume to be when it was still playing in 3D- would this make a difference? I then did a direct comparison with the video version to find that indeed the DVD has image loss both top and sides. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can only conclude that Warner were trying to recreate an authentic feel to the movie without the trickery. Far better to offer a straight forward 1:1.33 showing maximum image. Anyway I only rated this disc 2 for the soundtrack- it is wonderful to hear a classic movie with a true multi-channel sound. Overall a very disappointing release.
Movie Review: It Baffles Me! Summary: 2 Stars
It completely baffles me why they refuse to releas this (and other movie like it) in their original 3-D format. The only good excuse would be there is no existing 3-D print, and even then, we have the technology to replicate what they did in 1953! It makes no sense at all. They'd probably make more money if they did release this movie in 3-D (the only musical in film history to be shot in that format, I might add). I really like this movie but, I will stick to watching it on Turner Classic Movies until they come out with the original format.
